Book Description

June 23, 1997
Much of the White Sox history is underscored by its sometimes grim tug-of-war with the Cubs for the loyalties of Chicago fans. Even though the Sox earned bragging rights by soundly thrashing their cross-town rivals in a celebrated World Series, the annual post-season City Series, and any number of charity games that followed, the White Sox emerged as the classic underdog following the epochal Black Sox Scandal of 1920. The conspiracy to throw the 1919 World Series was a defining moment in baseball and for the fortunes of the beloved Chicago institution in the coming decades."The White Sox Encyclopedia" is a comprehensive history of one of the most controversial teams in the American league: the trials, tribulations and moments of glory of a ballclub interwoven into the fabric of the South Side Irish community that supported it through years of crowning glory, the disgrace of the devastating scandal, and the long, losing seasons that were to follow. This book brings together, for the first time, 10 decades of baseball on the South Side and will be a wealth of information for White Sox fans, sports mavens, and trivia buffs alike. It includes: 700 illustrations, including a 16-page color section; complete statistics through the 1996 season on hitting streaks and ERA's, box scores, trades; an all-time roster of managers, players and position leaders; season-by-season descriptions; game highlights; over 100 player profiles from Tommie Agee to Richie Zisk; all the great stars past and present; the managerial strategies, the personalities, honors; and, the milestones descriptions of unforgettable moments and memories. Richard C. Lindberg is the official White Sox historian and Managing Editor of the "Illinois Police & Sheriff's News". He is author of "Stealing First in a Two-Team Town", "Who's on Third", "Quotable Chicago", and "Chicago Ragtime" and has written for "Chicago Tribune" magazine, "Inside Chicago" magazine, and "Chicago History" magazine.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the Love of the Team, February 5, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: White Sox Encyclopedia (Hardcover)
Temple University Press has published some notable team histories in this on-going series. The Sox Encyclopedia however, is at the top rung of the ladder for its completeness, quality of photos, and crisp writing. Even Cub fans are envious, considering how badly done the Cub book was, in comparison. Only a true believer and a died-in-the-wool fan could have produced such an epic labor of love as this -- 600 plus pages of facts, figures, trivia, stories and Sox folklore. Lindberg is controversial in his opinions. A lot of Sox fans don't agree with him, but few doubt his knowledge of team history. Fans of the South Side team who haven't read this book are really missing out on something. Lindberg concludes with the 1997 season. I hope there is an update in the works. No one writes books about the Sox these days, let's face it. But then again no one writes about the Sox like this guy either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, May 29, 2004

This review is from: White Sox Encyclopedia (Hardcover)
This is the single best book that I have ever read about the Chicago White Sox. This encyclopedia covers the years from the team's founding in 1900 through the 1996 season. This book fills a need since few books of quality have been written about the White Sox over the years.

It includes short biographies of over 100 players in Sox history and biographies of all the managers, general managers and owners as well. The encyclopedia also includes a year by year summary of all of the club's seasons. And the best part is that it is loaded with all sorts of statistics that should settle just about every argument about Sox history and lore that you have had with fellow fans.

One of the best things about this book is just how much better it is than the entry for the Chicago Cubs in the larger Temple University MLB Team History Series. Hopefully, there are plans for a revised and expanded version of this excellent work.

Highly recommended.
