From Booklist
Both young and old alike find enjoyment in catching sight of wild deer. White-tailed deer are so numerous that they have been named state mammals in no less than five states. These graceful animals are quite shy and secretive by nature and are most often seen in the first and last hours of daylight. This book provides an in-depth look, covering habitat needs, food preferences, physical characteristics, antler development, social behavior, and general life cycle. Though attempting to include information from throughout their range, the author warns that there might be a slight southern bias, reflecting the large population in that area and his own 30 years of experience with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Unlike many other books on the subject, this one is neither a photographic tour de force nor a coffee-table volume. Rather, it is an excellent guide with all the essential information offered at a very reasonable price; it is aimed at--and will please--hunters, photographers, and conservationists. Fred Egloff
