I love this new world we live in; where musical genres can be fused together to form something that fully embraces multiple emotions, rather than just sticking to one specific style and beating the listener over the head with it until their bored out of their mind. Well, at least the truly artistic bands are capable of fusing multiple genres together.

Alter of Plagues happen to be one of those masterful bands that combine a few different genres together to form one cohesive masterpiece, and that masterpiece is 'White Tomb'. Epic, surreal, droning, blistering and highly emotional, 'White Tomb' will engulf you with its epic passages of post-rock drone, its blast beat infused black metal musings, and its all-encompassing atmosphere. Here's the deal: 4 tracks, each pushing the limits in terms of time and genre constraints; not one ounce of filler, not one wasted riff, not one pointless lyric. The songs are long (most push the 12 + minute mark, save for one track, which is about 9 minutes long), but good luck getting bored, because as soon as you get comfortable with one specific styling the band changes it up and you're treated to something completely different in style but similar in intensity.

You could probably say that 'White Tomb' is based in black metal, with touches of 'atmospheric/ambiance' and post-rock, but honestly there is nothing else like it, at least nothing I have ever found. One moment you're being assaulted by endless blast beats and tremolo riffing, and then next minute everything slows down with an amazing breakdown, and then you're taken through droning riffs, post-rock anthems and serene quiet moments, and even some doom-y inspired stuff; Alter of Plagues literally give you everything with this release, and its nothing short of perfection.

So being a fan of Negura Bunget, Agalloch, Enslaved, Wolves in the Throne Room, etc, I decided to do some research on other bands that produced similar music styles. This is one of the bands I found and I must say I'm really happy with this cd. It's definitely in the same vein as the bands I described, so if you like any of them, you will probably like this. Highly recommend.

I bought this recently after reading in Decibel that it's one of the predicted best releases for 2009 and it's a black metal release on Profound Lore Records, which is not a bad thing either. I just received this and gave it it's first full listen 2 minutes ago and was blown away. The best description that I can think of right off hand is that the music itself is like Isis/Pelican , with the vocals of Nachtmystium's Blake Judd on Assassins. I also hear a strong funeral doom element to it as wellin many parts .Maybe it could also be more accurately described as similar to Wolves in the Throne Room .If you are a fan of Black Metal, metal, blah...blah..., and any of these bands mentioned, then buy this. It's a great hybrid of all the things that are making metal/music great during the last several years. The songs are long but you'll never think about it because you get lost in them and next thing you know you are spat out and the 50 minute album is over. Think of being sucked into a black hole, winding up in a parallel universe and once the album ends you are spat back out into your original universe 50 minutes removed. It defies description, it is just incredible.BM is really excelling and I've been following it for years now so give this a spin and I'll guarantee that: IT WON'T DISAPPOINT; IT'LL BE ON MANY OF THE TOP LISTS FOR 2009, HOPEFULLY DECIBEL'S TOP 10 OF 40(and won't be overshadowed like Nachtmystium's Assassins out of 1st place by a band like Torche). No offense to any Torche fans though : )

This disc is truly dark in every sense of the word. I would say that only about half of the disc is music. The other half is very ambient, light guitar notes that implodes into epic Black Metal. There is an underlying 'electricity' to the album. Like the picture on the cover. But there is a mid section in the 2nd track 'Earth: As A Furnace' that is just mind blowing. It slowly fades, but it is so trance like that it blows the mind. A loud scorching vibe of electric current. If you listen loud to this Disc in headphones it is breathtaking. Epic highs and haunting, cold lows. Even the silences and low current vibes are interesting.

4 stars is for the music because it is good, almost like 'Agalloch' style slowness with some intense as hell vocals and fast parts/blast beats. It is nothing extremely new, but wrapped in this even colder ambient, trance like vibe it works really well.

You are best to listen to this as a whole when either walking in the dark or in seclusion somewhere. The neighbors definitely wont get this one. But it is extremely dark and as intense as its cover. Black and full of electricity. I really like this type of stuff because it almost scares the hell out of you. If you dig that, you will love this.
