The title might lead your expectations down a different road, but this book is truly a gem for cooks and non-cooks alike. It's a cookbook with recipes, yes, but what makes it special is the family stories that surround the creation and consumption of each. Morris' conversational tone paints vivid images of a tight-knit family and how integral food is in expressing their love for one another and their roots.

Beyond the stories are recipes that are easy to make, fun to create and delicious to eat. You haven't lived until you've tried Maw Maw's West Virginia Funeral Cake. Dee-lish.

As a southern girl living in California, this cookbook included some recipes I never expected to ever see in print. From family reunions to Fellowship Dinner at my grandmother's little Southern Baptist church, the book and the stories warmed my heart... or is that heartburn?

Whether you're a Southerner or just enjoy some unpretentious time in the kitchen, this book is a gem.

Food that I remember from church socials and neighborhood potlucks way back when ... well, minus the possum. Fun book, and I might even make some of the recipes (sans possum and if my arteries don't harden while reading).

If you like Cook Books got to recommend this!!! It is one You will laugh and still get good recipes--I maybe a be little partical to White Trash because it was written about homes he stopped at in Mississippi--He ate at every house and of course you will love the pictures--I have all 3 cook books and Love everyone of them!! Funny, Great Pictues, and Wonderful recipes--Highly recommended everyone get all 3 books!!!! If you like Home Stlye Southern Cooking---I bought the White Trash Book in 1988 and it is well used--Ordering another one for a friend for Christmas--Amazon is the only place I have found these to purchase!!

The stories in between the recipes are the best part. What a fun cultural insight to rural WV. Not sure there's any new recipe to try as much as a reminder of good home cookin' and the family that went with it.
