Book Description

Sixteen-year-old Dante is obsessed with learning to wield the nether, the powerful magic of the death god Arawn. But a century ago, Arawn's followers were scoured from the kingdom of Mallon. Their temples smashed. Their secrets lost.

When Dante tracks down a copy of their holiest book, he throws himself into its study--and finds himself under siege in the city streets. Arawn's believers aren't dead. They're in hiding, and they want back their book. With the help of the nether and a loudmouthed bodyguard named Blays, Dante escapes into the wilds. But Arawn's army is ready to march from the shadows. As they move against Mallon, they hunt Dante relentlessly, in search of the book.

And with his powers growing by the day, Dante finds himself used as a tool in the war against them. He and Blays are dispatched on a thousand-mile journey to assassinate the Arawnites' leader. If they fail, their homeland will fall.

About the Author

Born in Washington state, Ed has also lived in New York, Idaho, and most recently Los Angeles, where the culture is as confusing as the weather. In addition to his novels, he writes short stories, which have appeared in some twenty different anthologies and magazines online and in print. Like many authors, he has a fiancee and two dogs. The dogs wake him early, possibly to make sure he keeps working on the sequel to The White Tree.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a book, not an ages old painting October 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I perused the reviews from others, and quite frankly I don't understand what some of them think this is. It's a book, quite frankly, a Fantsy. I did not attempt to discet every line, I read it for the reason I always read, it appealed to me, it had a story line that grabs you and keeps you interested, and at the end, wanting more. Some like it, and some do not like it, that's what makes the world go round. If we all thought the same thoughts, had the same likes, the world would be "one boring place". Would I recommend this book, "Most Definitely", providing you are looking for a book to provide you with humor, wonder, excitement, and a need for more. I think this author has potential, and I think he did a good job. I am currently reading the next book in The Cycle of Arawn series, The Great Rift. I will review it upon conclusion. I think Edward W. Robertson has potential, and I expect he will improve his skills as he progresses. I also think his writing will continue to entertain many more readers as they discover his writings. Mr. Robertson, keep providing us with great work.

5.0 out of 5 stars epic adventure April 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was one of the most amazing books I've ever read. I could absolutely see it as a movie. The use of a sort of psychic power of the "nether" was something I've never seen or heard of before and it was quite intriguing. I hope to see more from Dante and Blays in the future!

5.0 out of 5 stars A review by Free Book Reviews September 2, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Overall Feedback: Robertson has woven a masterpiece! This is an astounding adventure fantasy that will have you hooked from the get go. "Nether" will be oozing from your brain by time you are finished and you will have two more heros to line up on your shelves. Robertson has made a story that shows not all heros have to always do the right thing to do the right thing. If you like fantasy, adventure and well just about anything else pick this one up fast.

Point of View: The viewpoint only adds to the story and the reader gets a real chance to connect to Dante and Blays.

Voice: Carries right on through every word, paragraph and page. Edward is great at prose and shows it off with the voice of this book.

Character Development: You find yourself just as intrigued by the thought of Arawn as Dante himself and alsmost can sense the "Nether". By the end you root for Dante and Blays even when they do the not so legal things.

Plot: Just like any fantasy you have to get into the world but Robertson jerks you into his world and all you can do is take in the sights and smells and enjoy yourself.

Dialogue: The charm, wit and drive of Dante and Blays is driven home through the dialogue.

Pacing: From page to page you can not remember turning anything. It is just one page in your mind.

Setting: You see what they see, feel what they feel and hear what they hear so yes, yes this is a bright spot of WOW!

Continuity: The story blazes along and draws you in then leaves you knowing there will be more. This is not that disappointed I wanted to know this kind of more but the happy where is the next in the series feeling.

4.0 out of 5 stars The White Tree January 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had my doubts at times about this novel in the beginning because there were some slow stretches in this epic journey and, as a female reader, I was not completely enamored of the main character, Dante, who seemed somewhat dismissive of women if not outright misogynistic. It was almost to the end of the book before he even mentioned a female as an interest of the main character, only to say that this young girl's interest in him was dampened by something "dark" she sensed in him that she could never heal. It seemed at times his driving motive was simple ambition, though in time it became clear there was an undercurrent of compassion and a need to simply have his life matter also imbedded in his psyche. Watching this old for his years boy grow and face an impossibly large task for a sixteen-year-old was compelling.

It was worth the time to get deeper into the story, and there were some wonderful laugh out loud moments in the interaction between Dante, Blays, and Robert Hobble. If an author makes me laugh, s/he's got me.

Well written (although there were still a few slight errors that escaped an editor's pen), this was a wonderful adventure with moments of enlightening oneness that reveal a depth in the author's gnosis, thought-provoking even cloaked in this other world's theology, and some truly profound spiritual questions raised though not entirely answered by the character. Yet.

I look forward to the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling fantasy saga January 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'd read Edward W. Robertson's Breakers and loved it, so I was looking forward to this one as well. It was far better than I'd dared hope, and of course I immediately read book 2, The Great Rift, as soon as book one was finished. Now the wait until book 3 is released. Thank goodness there's part 2 of Breakers to get through!

I think what I like most about Robertson's writing is his characters. They're more like real people, not perfect gallant heroes that don't exist in reality, a mixture of good and bad. I wasn't even sure I liked Dante at first, but he grew on me. And the wonderful humorous dialogues between Dante and Blays had me grinning throughout the tale. I also like Robertson's creative metaphors, things that he writes that make you stop and go "Huh?" before you get it.

Now, to drag myself out of that world within a book and back to my real life. Bleah. If I were a better writer myself, I'd be able to praise the books even more. All I can say is there are no regrets for the purchase, and I'll most likely be reading anything this author produces.

Ed wrote his first story at age seven: Godzilla fan fiction with the serial numbers filed off. He's been hooked on writing ever since.

A graduate of NYU's fiction program, his short stories have appeared in a couple dozen magazines online and in print. His novels include the post-apocalyptic Breakers series and the epic fantasy trilogy The Cycle of Arawn. He's been writing full-time since 2011.
