Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

White Wings, a damaged wooden sailboat, so captivates art teacher Matthew Adams that he yearns to own or at least restore it. The boat seems to communicate with him about the stormy day it wrecked off the coast of Marblehead, Massachusetts, in 1973. He eventually gains the confidence of the boat's present owner, Taylor Hayakawa, who inherited it when her mother was lost at sea. Divided into four sections, this story is told from the points of view of Matthew, Taylor, Becky DeWolf (Taylor's mother), and Rebecca Hayakawa (Taylor's daughter). Becky's pilot husband was lost early in World War II during an air raid over North Africa, but not before she had become pregnant by her lover, the owner of White Wings and a newly ordained priest, who joined the Pacific war effort and was thought to have also been killed. As the sailboat gains a new life, details of the grandmother, mother, and daughter float to the surface of this seaworthy tale. From Kirkus Reviews

Sailing, seduction, and family secrets over three generations of women keep things lively for the most part in ex-priest Montague's hefty first novel, but they fall short of providing an unqualified success. Young art teacher Matthew moves to Marblehead, Mass., looking for adventure, but is quickly in over his head when he stumbles on a wrecked wooden sailboat in a garage. It isn't for sale, but Matthew attempts to sweet-talk Taylor, its owner, and begins to research the boat's history, which, it turns out, is complex, mysterious, and romantic. Taylor tells him what she knows of the boat's unusual past: Her mother Becky sailed it from the onset of WW II until she went out in a storm in 1972 and never came back-- the boat was found wrecked on the rocks at the mouth of the harbor. With missing pieces of the family saga supplied by Becky's closest friend, Taylor and Matthew learn of Becky's marriage to a flyboy who volunteered to serve in the RAF, then, in his absence, of her attraction to an Episcopalian priest-to-be, with whom she sailed frequently. Ousted from Marblehead as too ardent a supporter of Jewish refugees, the future priest goes to the Pacific as a military chaplain, leaving Becky the boat but not knowing he's left her pregnant as well. He is captured and reported dead, while Becky's husband dies in action; she's left with a child whom she passes off as legitimate, never telling her daughter about her real father. But father and daughter's paths cross when Taylor, as a young woman, goes to live in Japan. That contact, along with all the other information Matthew and Taylor assemble, allows the pair finally to figure out how the boat came to be wrecked. Some heat but not much sizzle, along with a few nagging loose ends. Even so, an artful, pleasant read, tailor-made for the beach, where surf and salt air can provide complementary distractions. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. 5.0 out of 5 stars Mystery and Romance in a Small New England town:, August 15, 2001

"zapbug22" (Marblehead, Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: White Wings (Paperback)
Dan Montague has created a mysterious and intriguing story around a sailing vessel named "White Wings." This sensitive tale takes place in the coastal New England town of Marblehead, Massachusetts. Readers will find themselves entranced as they are guided through a maze of time and tangled romances in the history of an almost magical sailing vessel. A young high school art teacher begins the journey in the present day. The story twists and turns through time as he becomes involved in the restoration of White Wings - a sailboat entrusted to a middle-aged woman by her long-lost best friend. The young man finds himself trying to solve the mysteries of the vessel's crash onto the treacherous rocks of Marblehead's Fort Sewall, the sudden disappearance of the boat's guadian, and the secret to winning a seemingly impenetrable woman's heart.

Montague has set another novel, "Second Chance," in Marblehead, as well. It is not a sequel to "White Wings," but the excellent quality of writing is of the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is a book filled with seduction, love, and sadness., June 8, 1999

This review is from: White Wings (Paperback)
A heart melting story divided into 4 parts that tells about the lives of 3 outstanding women, Taylor Hayakawa, Rebecca Hayakawa, and Becky DeWolf, or later known as Becky Harrington, and one man, Matthew Adams, who hears and experiences lives of the 3 women, and White Wings, the sailboat that was wrecked in 1973. It's a mystery of Becky's disappearence one night when the boat came back but Becky didn't. It's one man, Taylor Harrington, and one woman, Becky, who experience love, lust, and loss. Then giving up everything she has, she floats off with that one man spending the rest of her life with him. Dan Montague puts everything in perfect form. It was so strong and moving. I loved every second of it. 'White Wings' will always be my favorite book.

This review is from: White Wings (Hardcover)
It is the sweetest, and saddest book. I'd give anything to be Becky. The ending was so sweet. Dan Montague used the perfect words through the whole book. He's a master at story writing. I'm even moving to Marblehead, Massachusetts because of the book. It's my dream to have a life like Becky. I hope I do.
