This is an excellent story, told from the animal's point of view:They speak first hand and tell the story. There is a narrator also. The "white wolf"is actually a huge Bull terrier, who becomes the alpha male of a wolf pack. His nemesis is the 140 pound black wolf who rules the kingdom of wolves,a loner and slayer of the mighty bull elk(wapiti)in single combat.(unheard of). These dogs are actually a refined pit bull, with an long downturned jaw for added biting power and small eyes deepset in the skull for added protection. The ferocity has been bred out somewhat in modern times and they are silly clowns,hard-headed and probably the strongest of all dogs pound for pound.Woe to any man or beast that attacks them.I read in a hunter's book that one he owned attacked a huge Cape buffalo in Africa! It grabbed it by the jaw and tired to flip it.They weigh from 1500 pounds and up.The dog was killed when the buffalo could not dislodge the dog and ran it into a tree over and over till it was dead!!!!Male lions have a hard time killing these beasts in combat and often fail.I talked to someone who knows dog fighter in Detroit who uses a bull terrier to break up fights on the pits when the dogs have a death grip on one another!!!!They are the Target dog in the commercials in flyers and TV,who would have guessed??

Max Brand did an excellent job of relating animal instincts, as well as their fight for survival and leadership. Brand narrated the story in a very meaningful manner in White Wolf's relationship with his foster parent, Mother Wolf. This was the fifth Max Brand book I have read, but it won't be my last. "The White Wolf" is probably not one of Brand's best works, but is definitely worth your time in reading.
