Biography

World leaders, powerful CEOs, and assorted other fat cats could learn myriad lessons from Chromeo, but the number one tip that Dave 1 and P-Thugg have is this: Know thyself, know thy vibe, and stay thy course. The rest of the population will catch up. What this means is that Chromeo is really good at being Chromeo. The mission, the package, the vision—it’s been a straight shot ... Editorial Reviews

Presenting the Canadian funk lords fourth album White Women. As a work of cultural theory, it posits that we are living in a post-nostalgia age. All previous genres and styles of music now coexist within a singularity of moves and gestures. (Ouch, sorry, got possessed by a cultural studies prof. for a second there... but the foregoing is true of Chromeo, just FYI.) More importantly, as pure entertainment, White Women perpetuates and elevates Chromeo s existing blueprint: sexy funk, ass-targeting beats, melodic honey, and smart lyrics about the foibles of contemporary love.

If you're reading this review as someone who already enjoys Chromeo's sound wondering if White Women is for you, stop reading right now and go buy the album. It has everything you've come to love about the Funklordz. Nothing but love for the ladies in every song, P on talkbox (albeit less than previous albums), big words that you have to pull out a dictionary for (I'm looking at you "attenuate" and "acrimony"), saxiphone solos, and nonstop thrilling funk that will have you moving all summer long. The throwback 80s sound is extremely popular right now, and no band has been doing it better than Chromeo. Several of the songs off White Women evoke such a feeling of nostalgia I feel like I should be sitting in front of a console television watching new episodes of Miami Vice, it's that authentic. From the 10 year old, almost primitive in comparison album "She's in Control" they just keep refining their sound; getting better and more funky with each offering. White Women is hands down their best album yet, and it will be hard to top.

My top 5 songs in no particular order are:

Jealous (I Ain't With It)
Somethingood
Come Alive
Fall Back 2U
Sexy Socialite

Everything else is also very good, with the exception of "Ezra's Interlude". It feels tacked on and lacks that Chromeo polish that the rest of the album shines with. It would have been much better had they dropped it off. If I had to pick a different least favorite song it might be Frequent Flyer, it's a little cheesy for my taste, but it's in a distant second to last place from Ezra.

Overall a solid album for existing fans and people new to electrofunk as well.

It's rare that I will describe an album as a "fun" listen. Not that listening to music is not fun, but often times it is not the emotion that first comes to mind when listening to music. However with White Women, Chromeo has crafted a sweet, poppy musical carnival ride that is a joy to listen to, for the most part. No one told Chromeo that it's not 1984 anymore, and they're all the better for it. It's soaked in nostalgia and glistening with the gleam of 1980s new wave funk neon. The songs have lyrics which are hard to take seriously (and many tunes essentially premise around chasing tail), however this does not detract from the pleasant trip I had listening. If you like to dance a little, have some fun, and listen to carefree songs with no shame or guilt, this is an album for you.

Favorite Tracks: "Come Alive (feat. Toro y Moi)," "Old 45's," "Fall Back 2U"

RIYL: Empire of the Sun, Strange Talk, Daft Punk, any artist from the early to mid 1980s.

A modern day Hall and Oates with a touch of M.J. and Earth Wind and Fire. From start to finish this one can just stay on repeat. Would be awesome to workout to or listening to in the car. It is my favorite album they have put out to date. Listen to it first on Spotify or just save your time and buy it now. Well worth owning!

I've been a huge Chromeo fan since the first time I heard "Needy Girl" 10 years ago. All their CDs are solid but this one is the best from start to finish. It's fresh, fun music that everyone can enjoy.

These are the coolest white guys since Daft Punk and I daresay their music is *even better.*

This album is pure pleasure. After listening to it once, I was hardly able to turn it off. I literally would not go to bed because I had to listen to it more and more times. This has been going on for several days.

I took Miss H's advice and "just bought it," and I recommend you do too. Forget about Youtube or radio; Chromeo's music is meant to be listened to in high fidelity, through real speakers. And yes, you want all the songs--even Ezra Koenig's. (That song is only bad by comparison to the rest of the album.) But you *definitely* want Jealous, Come Alive, Over Your Shoulder, Sexy Socialite, and Lost on the Way Home.

So, what is this music? Well, it's impeccably fun, lush, catchy electrofunk with sparkling composition, heart-thumping beats and deliciously exorbitant lyrics. The pair's charming and flamboyant personality comes out strongly through the record. Their performance is subtly intelligent, consistently artful, and wildly infectious.

Obviously its existential purpose is to be played in a club. But if you own this album, you can use it to make pretty much any moment of your life a *lot* more fun.

My theory on the concept and title of "White Women" is that Chromeo wrote up a list of female archetypes (not specifically white: the socialite, the jetsetter, the needy girl, the hopeless romantic, etc.) and wrote a song about each one. Then they decided "Women" was a bit too ponderous a title, so they went with "White Women." But rest assured that this album will be enjoyed by any man or woman, white or black (...and everyone else too).

After you buy this album, please find a way to see Chromeo live! Trust me on this.

It's like they can make no bad music. Seriously. Huge fan of Chromeo ever since their first album and they continue to impress. I know some may not like the 80s like sound they have embraced, but i LOVE it. I also feel they have always had a hint of that in their music but more so on this album in my opinion. Standouts for me on this album are Jealously(i ain't with it), Over your Shoulder, Hard to say no, and my favorite, Fall back 2u.

Autorip for Pre Orders?
In theory the autorip version should pop up in your cloud the day the album is released. In practice, I've found this to happen sometimes and not others, am not sure why. I pre-ordered the new Afghan Whigs album a few weeks ago and it appeared in the cloud the morning of release. But the new... Read More
