The history of the Aboriginal community school's initiative has been a history of controversy. Whitefella School, in presenting a hard-hitting analysis of Aboriginal resistance to the school system, argues that community schooling has largely failed to provide an educated leadership and may well be contributing to a disintegration of Aboriginal society.
Through case studies of two schools in central Australian Pitjantjantjara settlements, a number of key themes are explored. These include the historical and present-day relationship between school and community, the school curriculum and Aboriginal culture, the nature of Aboriginal resistance, and the provision of education under conditions of cultural stress.
