David's first two CD's after the split of Deep Purple show a much more versatile singer than many would have guessed. With songwriting partner Mickey Moody and a host of session mainstays David recorded two albums worth of R&B based pop that he can well be proud of. Both albums sound like they were fun to make and a relaxed atmostphere drifts from the speakers. No heavy metal here just good times and good tunes. Mr Coverdale would do well to look to this time for direction now the metal bubble has burst.

I have always preferred David's earlier material to his 80's hair-band, pop/glam metal phase. He himself referred to this era of being made into a "girlie man", and this was something that had a supposedly adverse effect on him even though this is the period where he sold the most records and made the most money. Go figure. I think that if David had stuck to his roots, much of his music catalogue would have had a longer shelf-life. If you grew up listening to, and admiring his work with Deep Purple, then I suggest sticking to his earlier solo and group work. This grand CD offering is a great place to start. Definitely for the more mature discerning listener. Enjoy!
