I was born in Queens (Elmhurst General Hospital) in 1948 and lived in Beechhurst and later, Whitestone from then until 1971. Mr. Antos' book is a walk down memory lane. Many scenes of old Whitestone in his book were virtually the same until the late 50s. We didn't have a car so we mostly walked from my home in Beechhurst to both my grandparents' homes, one on 16th. Rd. and the other on 20th. Ave. in Whitestone (my one grandfather, from Poland, settled in Whitestone in 1907, the only house on 16th. Rd.) . Doing so gave me an intimate knowledge of every nook, cranny and alley in Whitestone. Of course there are some landmarks I remember that are not included in his book, and some discrepancies (some of those may just be due to my aging brain). Overall, I give it an A++.

The subject of this review reflects my own personal knowledge regarding the neighborhood of Whitestone, before and after reading Mr. Antos's book. The wide variety of pictures coupled with clear and concise captions make this a most enjoyable read. Upon completing this book, it seems that I have found an interest in urban history that I never knew I had. Being a resident of Queens myself, I look forward to visiting many of the sites mentioned, only this time, with the knowledge and understanding of the history that once took place. Well done!

I am disappointed in this book as the author appears to have idealized the past and not chosen to include any mention of the Jewish community.

I came to Whitestone as a child in around 1953 to the garden apartments Clearview along with many other Jewish families who were looking for a more 'countrified' setting than the boroughs we came from. Although the author includes this time period, there is no mention of the Jewish community at all.

I always credit Whitestone and the NYC public schools with my excellent education.

I am surprised that the editing process of the publishers did not pick up this omission.
