Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4 Up McClung turns his considerable talents to the whitetail deer, carefully recreating the habitat and life of this graceful animal. He avoids anthropomorphism, and his realistic portrait gives readers an accurate glimpse into the world of a deer in the Pennsylvania woods. A concluding chapter outlines the place the whitetail has held in American history, from the mainstay of the Woodland Indian to the big game hunter's quarry today. McClung obviously dislikes hunting, but his ``old and experienced hunter, best in the state,'' after wounding Star in his prime, decides in a later encounter to let him live out his natural lifespan. Animal biographies provide a clear window to the world of nature when handled as carefully as McClung does here. However, report writers will find the lack of an index to be a handicap. This book, with its handsome pencil illustrations, large type, excellent use of white space, and attractive cover, will certainly appeal to budding lovers of the natural world.
