This film covers the fascination of discovery at the birth and development of family therapy, blending the systems and views of Gregory Bateson with the ideas of Milton H. Erickson, MD on hypnosis and therapy as well as Zen.
Haley's original and enduring contribution is his brief directive therapy to solve problems, which is of interest to mental health students, colleagues, parents, and educators who are grappling with a rapidly changing mental health care milieu. Included is material from 40 years of interviews, seminars, and cases leading to family therapy issues of the 1900s by one of its founders.
Jay Haley, formerly with the Mental Research Institute and the Philadelphia Child Care Guidance Clinic as well as the Family Therapy Institute of Washington, DC served on the psychiatric faculties of the University of Maryland, Howard University, and the University of Pennsylvania. His experience is covered in 19 books including Strategies of Psychotherapy, the Power Tactics of Jesus Christ, Uncommon Therapy, Leaving Home, Learning and Teaching Therapy and several films including Heroin My Baby, and Milton H. Erickson, MD Explorer in Hypnosis and Therapy which appeared on PBS.
Madeleine Richeport-Haley, PhD is an anthropologist filmmaker whose work includes consultant to National Geographic in Brazil, and documentaries appearing on PBS. As a WHO mental health consultant, she has made therapy training films. She and Jay Haley collaborated on Milton H. Erickson, MD Explorer in Hypnosis and Therapy and Dance and Trance of Balinese Children.
