Whitney at her best, but the sound quality is a little off,

This review is from: Whitney Houston: A Song for You Live (DVD)
This DVD is actually a concert called "Welcome Home Heroes" from 1999 that appeared on HBO a few times. There is a VHS version of the original concert that apparently has more of the concert on it than this DVD does, but since I don't have a VHS player anymore, I gave this DVD a chance.First of all, I have to say, WHITNEY is amazing in this concert. It's sort of sad to see the old unaffected Whitney at her best and know that her best days are behind her. The highlight for me is her performance of "Greatest Love of All" from this concert. I saw it on YouTube, and it's the main reason I bought this DVD. HIGHLY recommended. Now to the bad news... the sound quality on this DVD is pretty bad by today's standards. It sounds like the recording was taken from a microphone that was somewhere in the audience during the concert. Whitney's vocals are a bit drowned out. The emulation of the 5.1 sound on the DVD is a joke. I switched the audio setting on the DVD menu to just "stereo" and it sounded a little better, but not much. Also, the DVD menu is laughable and very homemade looking. There's no way this could possibly be a Whitney-sanctioned DVD... I doubt she has anything to do with it. Still, if you don't have a VHS player so you can get the VHS version of the original concert, I have to recommend this DVD to any Whitney fan. Even non-fans won't be able to help but be touched by her performance of "Greatest Love of All" from this concert. It's amazing. UPDATE - late 2011: 3 years after my original review, I just watched the performance of "Greatest Love of All" again. The quality on the DVD isn't perfect (it was pre-HD after all), but it is 100 times better than the versions on YouTube. To me, without question this is the most sincere and beautiful live performance of any song I have EVER seen by ANY artist. It amazes me every time I see it. I can't believe this is the same person as the Whitney in later years. It is a tragedy. If you have a chance to snag this DVD for under 20 dollars, DO IT. UPDATE 2 - Feb 2012: RIP Whitney.

Because the packaging was different, I unknowingly order this concert twice. Like the other reviewer, I saw Whitney on YouTube performing "Greatest Love of All" and had to have it!
Fortunately for me the "Whitney Houston Live In Concert" has better picture quality.

did not have th songs i 3was looking for. Bad thing about ordering on line is that: no titles for songs, idividuals get rid of the dvd that sucks by reselling them to collectors like me. Do not know3 the length of the dvd.
SHOULD BE ABLE TO READ THE BACK OF THE DVDs BEFORE PURCHASING THEM. |
