3.0 out of 5 stars This is good but I wouldn't rate this as her best!
I remember listening to I wanna Dance with Somebody over and over again, and I thought Wow she truly has an amazing voice! My family members used to love listening to her music at reunions and picnicks, and they reguarded her and patti labelle(i agree, but her music puts me to sleep) as the best music artists. I remember listening to it over and over again because it was so...

Whitney's sophomore effort, simply entitled "Whitney", was an album fill with truly great music. Whitney had the voice and some great material (thanks to her mentor Clive Davis) to put together a truly classic album.

The sound of the album is more of a sythesized-pop/R&B feel (remember, this WAS the 80s), with the signature Whitney Houston ballads. The album features productions and writing from Narada Michael Walden (who produced most of the album - and frequently produced for many, many artists throughout the 80s and early 90s), Jellybean, Billy Steinberg/Tom Kelly, and Michael Masser, among others.

Most notable hits are "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)", "So Emotional" (my personal favorite), "Love Will Save The Day", "Where Do Broken Hearts Go," and "Didn't We Almost Have It All." Another notable song is "I Know Him So Well" which features Whitney's mother Cissy Houston.

Overall, if you are a fan of the great pop sounds of the 80s, or just addicted to Whitney's amazing voice, this is for you!

Whitney Houston has left us; and that's a terrible shame. Personally, I am shocked and very sad by her untimely death; but it's also true that she lives on through her music. "Whitney" was one of her terrific albums with nothing but excellent music; I always like to pop this into my CD player and hear it yet again!

The daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of 1960s pop diva Dionne Warwick and even the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin, Whitney was born to be a star; and that's the way I will always remember her. And wow, how I can remember her with the music on this album! "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" both made the airwaves sizzle and got people up and dancing on the dance floor; this was a great hit I heard first on the radio. "Just The Lonely Talking Again" is very poignant; I'm impressed by just how well Whitney manages to breathe such passion into this ballad. "Love Will Save the Day" was another huge hit for this incredible artist; and "Didn't We Almost Have It All" moves me every time I hear it. The music that accompanies Whitney as she sings "Didn't We Almost Have It All" fits in perfectly with her vocals, too.

"So Emotional" was yet another Whitney Houston hit that showed off her vocal prowess and demonstrated what a superstar she was; and "Where You Are" is very well done. There's backup on "Where You Are" but Whitney didn't need it--her talent carried her through these numbers easily. "Love Is a Contact Sport" has a great beat; and "You're Still My Man" has Whitney squarely front and center--she never lets go of a single superfluous note. "For the Love of You" is easy on the ear and the album ends with two terrific numbers, "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "I Know Him So Well." Awesome!

Whitney Houston was a remarkably gifted genius who could sing alongside the best of them and shine every bit as brightly! I highly recommend this for any Whitney Houston fan; and newcomers to her artistry would do well to add this to their music collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another triumph; packed with essential #1 smash hits!, September 30, 2000

This is just as great as her first CD, and in my opinion even a bit better (if that's possible). Even if you're not a huge fan of hers, you simply must own this album. There are four undisputable reasons why: The uptempo dance gems "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" and "So Emotional" are THE BEST!!! They truly stand the test of time. And the beautiful ballads "Didn't We Almost Have It All" and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" have also held up over the years--just listen to that voice!!! When you're a singer of this magnitude and vocal talent, even great songs become EXCELLENT songs and she's definitly the best. These four songs are essential for any cd collection. Worth every penny! If you ever had your doubts about this singer, then I challenge you to listen to these treasures and then you'll know what a phenomenal talent Whitney Houston really is. My favorite Whitney album of all time! Simply the best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Her best cd @}->---, April 22, 2006

This is when Whitney was on top. She was pretty unstoppable then; her music was beautiful and her personal life was a bit more normal. I do not think there is a bad song on here. My all time favourite Whitney song is here - Didn't We Almost Have It All. It's such an amazing and powerful song - it truly brings out the best in her vocals. The other great songs are So Emotional, You're Still My Man and Where Do Broken Hearts Go?.

For her sake, I really wish she could get back to this level of standard again. She is so talented and it's such a shame that things aren't as good as they could be for her. If she could sing and have music like this again and be back on top of her game, she'd give Mariah more of a run for their money.

Fantastic cd - you must own it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Pop/R&B CD, November 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Whitney (Audio CD)
The song order on Whitney Houston's partly self-titled CD ("Whitney", not to be confused with her full-name debut: "Whitney Houston") begins with a fast-slow pattern, then remains slow for the last four ballads. For the most part, I like her fast songs best (like "Love Will Save the Day"--an optimistic tune--and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" and "So Emotional"--both catchy, upbeat tracks). The slower songs are a bit too romantic and cheesy for me, but fans of Whitney Houston will probably like this CD, cheese and all. Whether she's belting out a fast one or easing down to a ballad, Whitney is without a doubt one of the best female singers in pop/r&b music, particularly during the 80s and 90s, as this CD proves.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "Old" Whitney is the Best Whitney, June 11, 2001
By
This review is from: Whitney (Audio CD)
The last Whitney Houston allbum I bought was "The Bodyguard" and I have not bought another of her albums since. The reviewer who said that Whitney was better "pre-Bobby" hit the nail on the head. Nothing compares to her first three albums-this one being her second and my favorite. The smoothness of this album is what makes it sooo good. There really isn't a bad song on here. I actually don't enjoy the songs that were hits as much as the ones that weren't. I kept reading the reviews for this album and near the end someone FINALLY mentioned the song "Just the Lonely Talking Again"-the best song on the album-hands down. This is actually one of my favorite songs to put on after a stressful day-it's smooth, soulful and transporting. The other would be "I Know Him So Well" written by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA. Fabulous song and fabulous writers, but that's another review all together.

Buy this album, enjoy this album-this is as good as Whitney gets!

5.0 out of 5 stars Who Hired Lloyd Bradley (the critic)?, September 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Whitney (Audio CD)
How dare Lloyd Bradley diss Whitney's singing talent and hits! Evidently, boyfriend has no soul, and is a lousy critic to boot! Dear Mr. Bradley, for your information: "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go?" were mega-hits and both went to #1 thank you very much.

To me it's amazing how well Whitney Houston's second record has held up so well nearly 25 years after its initial release. This shows how talented and remarkable Whitney was because any work by an artist that can still sound good and relevant after two decades is an achievement to the talent they were.

"Whitney" went to the top of Billboard for an impressive 11 week run (debuting at #1: the first for a woman) spanning four #1 singles in a row. With this feat Whitney Houston holds the record as being the only artist (along with her first three #1 songs from her debut album) to have 7 songs go straight to #1 in a row. Not even The Beatles or Elvis did that!
The songs from this gem that went to the top were "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", "So Emotional", "Didn't We Almost Have It All" and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go?" (my favorite from this collection". Whitney would collect yet another Grammy win for Best female Vocal Performance for "I Wanna Dance With Somebody".

"Whitney" solidifed Whitney Houston as a superstar with staying power who could pick hits like no other singer.

The album went 9X Platinum in the U.S and sold many more millions throughout the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars the Whitney that Everyone fell in Love With, September 27, 2007
This review is from: Whitney (Audio CD)
This is the Whtiney that I fell in love with. Carefree, beautiful, happy and very talented!! "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" has gotta be the song of the eighties. Are you old enough to remember when this song was on the radio every hour and every day? "So Emotional" is a close second favorite track of mine. But everything on this CD is so perfect. I hope Whitney can regain some of this success in the future.
