Book Description

October 1998
There are two fundamental spiritual questions that all true seekers want to know the answer to. The first is: 'Who am I? Who am I beyond the mind, beyond the personality, beyond any fixed notion of self?'. The second question is: 'How shall I live? How can I live in a way that manifests the spiritual vision of profound simplicity, dynamic freedom and perfect oneness?'. All the questions that have been asked of spiritual masters throughout history in the end refer to these two questions alone: 'Who am I? and How shall I live?'.

More About the Author

Andrew Cohen is a spiritual teacher, cultural visionary, and founder of the global nonprofit EnlightenNext and its award-winning publication EnlightenNext magazine. His original teaching of Evolutionary Enlightenment redefines spiritual awakening within the context of cosmic evolution and highlights a new understanding of God or Spirit as the creative impulse toward change in both self and culture. After a transformative meeting with the renowned Advaita Vedanta master H.W.L. Poonja in 1986, Cohen began teaching internationally and almost immediately started reshaping the larger cultural conversation about the purpose and significance of enlightenment in our time. He founded EnlightenNext magazine almost twenty years ago as a forum for serious spiritual and philosophical inquiry, and has since become known for his unique capacity to foster culture-changing dialogues among leading thinkers from a wide array of traditions and disciplines.

5.0 out of 5 stars A contemplation of paradox, August 9, 2010
This review is from: Who Am I? & How Shall I Live? (Paperback)
I first read this book almost eight years ago, and found it extremely helpful in illuminating areas of life that I had only begun to intuit. Andrew Cohen speaks about the two fundamental spiritual questions--Who am I, and How shall I live--in ways that are simple, understandable, and powerful.

His pointing out instructions for discovering one's essential nature are as clear as any Buddhist teachings, and are delivered in wholly contemporary and relevant language. And his contemplation on the purpose of life is both inspiring and uplifting. Rarely have I been so filled with a spirit of positivity and limitless potential as when reading this book.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in exploring the deeper dimensions of life with a seriousness that has the potential to bring about lasting transformation.

1.0 out of 5 stars drivel, November 8, 2007

The two questions in the title are precisely what Cohen should be asking himself. He does not walk the talk and put into practice himself what he inflicts on his sad credulous disciples. Hitler once said that it was incumbent upon the individual to surrender to the overwhelming desire to obey and thus cease to be an individual, thus becoming a cypher, a part of the collective and an abject unquestioning follower of the leader. Cohen's sect runs on the same lines, as does any other, and his followers have surrendered themselves to a spiritual homunculus whose teachings are facile and risible. The result is cruelty.
