4.0 out of 5 stars The Misunderstood Season, December 28, 2009
This review is from: Top Chef Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
A lot of people did not understand this season. Those of us who live the show need to speak up.
Yes, this was amateur night. But, the show admitted they made mistakes in the first season. Starting with Season 2, there were culinary criteria, which wasn't in existence in Season 1.
If I recall my reality shows correctly, this was the first one of this kind. So there was a learning curve that they had to create to make it work in future seasons and for other shows of this type.
Personally, I think this season was the best. The characters are great, passionate, and yes immature. But who isn't? This is a contest. And most people in a contest do act like they are in high school, no matter what the age. There's something about the aura of a competition that makes people regress a little, some more than others. Dave, Tiffany, Miguel, Stephen. They provided great entertainment. If you don't believe that, think about when you were trying for something, homecoming queen, theater parts, sports, even the honor society contests. Weren't you trying to syc some people out?
For us foodies who like this stuff, there was a lot of interesting ideas brought forth. Lots of the recipes were more along the lines of what a "normal cook" could make. Not like the molecular stuff, or the nitrogen stuff, or the gastronomy stuff. This was more along the lines of "real people".
I love this show, and do wish it was out on DVD, so I could share it with others.

Some people say that this was a hack job of a season one....I totally have to disagree. It's raw, real and my all time favorite season of Top Chef. Chef Dave Martin made the show! He was entertaining, adorable and oh yeah he is a AMAZING chef! I am a complete Foodie, I don't spend a lot of time at home so for that reason I don't have cable or direct TV. So I now own Season 1 through 5 of Top Chef and can't wait to watch Season 6 & 7.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Start to a Terrific Show, November 18, 2009
This review is from: Top Chef Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
I started watching Top Chef in season 3, so it was fun to go back and watch seasons 1 and 2. It's enjoyable to see how Top Chef has developed since the first season. The first couple of episodes are a little slow, but the show definitely gets better as it goes along, and the final five or six chefs could stand up against the chefs from any of the other seasons. Although it has its moments, Season 1 is less focused on personality conflicts than Season 2. I'd recommend it to any Top Chef fan!
