Hipster skewering at its finest,
By K. Swanson (Austin, TX United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Who is KK Downey? (DVD)
4.6 starsThis is a little indie movie from a Montreal comedy troupe that clearly knows way too many hipsters and music scene hangers-on. The jokes come fast and furious and get edgier as the film winds along. It all moves quite well and the actors are uniformly entertaining, not easy in a film with a budget that was probably less than most visits to Whole Foods. Speaking of Austin, I wish this film was compulsory viewing for all the sxsw wannabe hipster poser weasels about to slither into town next month in their tight little black jeans and sleeve tattoos. This flick skewers that entire sub-culture (what an accurate term) so neatly and deftly that there's little left to say. The whole take on management of "talent" is also dead-on, and if you've ever dealt with showbiz types you'll love this portrayal of them. Same goes for indie music critics, who get theirs and then some here. All in all, a surprisingly funny and sharp film, and one I'd never heard of until finding it in a local library. No surprise that a fellow Austinite would find this appealing, as it nails the pretentious "alternative" music and art scenes to the wall. If you know any hipsters, make sure they see KK Downey, and watch as they nod sagely and go, "That's how it is!" Then direct them to a mirror. It's rather amazing that this has only one other review here, but I think KK Downey will become a real cult classic in years to come. It got very limited distribution when it came out, most likely because it's all a little too accurate for the comfort of the endlessly phony and incestuous modern media world. Give it a gander and prepare to laugh.

A great natural cast having a ball playing the types of characters we all secretly like to snicker at (behind their backs, of course).
Wait for Dan Haber in the final reel to knock you off your A$$ with laughs as he plays (by far) the craziest dude you've ever seen on screen. See it with friends. |
