Editorial Reviews

2009 album from the R&B singer, songwriter, producer and former member of After 7. Who Knew marks another milestone in the career of a man who embodies the word 'artist': recording only the finest material, putting his heart and soul into each note, and staying true to his musical roots without following trends or compromising himself for the sake of airplay or fame. Who Knew marks the Indianapolis native's long-awaited return and finds him with a new label, new material, a new home in Nashville and a fresh start.

3.0 out of 5 stars 4 stars if you are an existing fan., October 15, 2009
This review is from: Who Knew (Audio CD)
The first reviewer "Roz" has made many valid points. Firstly, the length is a mere 33 minutes. When you take away the 2 talking interludes you're down to 8 tracks at 30 minutes long. Does that make it an EP or a full length album? It's been 10 years since 24/7 and that's all we get.
Secondly, like "Roz" I agree that the music is good and fans will enjoy, but 24/7 is stronger. Perhaps that is because his brother Babyface did not contribute to this project. Apparantly Babyface did not have time as they had conflicting schedules. C'mon, Babyface has had 10 years to give Kevon just one or two tracks for this project. Is something else going on here???
Thirdly: It's ashame that Kevon's great track from the excellent new CD "Silky Soul Music: A Tribute to Maze" was not included as not only would it have added length to this CD but it would have fit in nicely with this project.
Finally my rating. For casual fans or those not familiar with Kevon or After 7 this probably is not the project I would recommend and I doubt it's going to get him many new followers even though I like it. 24/7 or an After 7 album would make a better recommendation. Therefore 3 stars.
If you are an existing fan not only should you get this, but make sure you get the new Maze tribute CD with newly recorded tracks by Kevon Edmonds, Mary J. Blige, Joe, Mint Condition, etc. I must admit "Who Knew" does not sound like an independant release, so don't be too put off by that and the fact that Babyface's input is unfortunately missing.

3.0 out of 5 stars KEVON - WHO KNEW, October 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Who Knew (Audio CD)
Ok, let me start by saying from my heart that I love Kevon Edmonds,I think he is a very talented and gifted Artist with a truly amazing voice. However, after listening to his second solo project,I was really disappointed. He did not sing from his soul. He almost sounded as if he didn't know what he was singing about. The tracks were bad, the background singers were bad...they sound really lazy, the hooks were bad, and it sounded to me that he sang in the "same key" on every song thoughout the entire song. The title tracks did not have much to do with the lyrics and just not enough musical instruments such as synthesizers, etc. For such a short CD why were there two intros? Apparently, this project needed some more work and maybe a song or two from Babyface would have been great! Not sure why there were NO collaborations from Face or if they had conflicting schedules, but really sad if they couldn't work out something.Maybe my disappointment is due to the high anticipation I had.Kevon could have even added a couple songs, one from the Save the Last Dance Soundtrack called "Move It Slow" or one from THe Best of After 7 CD a song he recorded "Not Enough Hours in the Night" or the track with his brothers called "Honey".They harmonized very well on that particular song. The brothers are really talented and I expected nothing but the best, but whatever his goal was on this CD in my opinion, it did not "capture" whatever he was trying to say and will have a tough time capturing his audience. If he was trying to make a point, I guess I missed it.Usually when I put on an After 7 or a Kevon CD I listen to it over and over and over consecutively. Not this one.I guess I'll just continue to listen to his first solo project 24/7 which was and still is "HOT" and all of the After 7 CDs.I'm somewhat shocked that this material was released because Kevon can really sing!No doubt about that;I even enjoyed listening to him live one morning when he was on Tom Joyner at 6 AM;and he sounded ever so good. You are a true Artist when you can sing live and sound really great; but this.....only because of my deep love for him as an Artist I'll give it 3 stars which it does not deserve;hopefully he will not wait 10 yrs before he releases another one and the next one will be "HOT"!I must agree with one review that "OH" is the best song on the CD! Love you Kevon!

After anxiously awaiting the return of Kevon Edmonds, after such an excellent debut, I was extremely disappointed with this project. After all this time and only eight songs? and whats up with the cheesy interludes?. Should've replaced those with two good songs. Also, I thought Face would've collaborated with him on this CD. I'm looking forward to the return of After 7. Don't waste your money on this CD.
