A Gem of a Mystery by a Fine Author,

This review is from: Who Is Lewis Pinder? (Hardcover)
The setting is rural England in the 1960's. A man is found lying unconscious on the edge of a field, and when revived in the hospital, turns out to have a case of total amnesia. The hospital staff dub the man Lewis Pinder - "Lewis" after the name of the hospital ward, "Pinder" after Pinder Lane, where the man was found. The case has many baffling aspects, not the least of which is the fact that the man called Pinder is positively identified as FOUR distinct persons, each of whom has been dead for over twenty years; what is more, each of the four is said to have had the same unusual birthmark as Pinder, as well as the same scar on the back of one knee. Police Sergeant Roger Fenn works to solve the identity of Lewis Pinder in a tale full of surprises and suspense.
Welsh writer L.P. Davies wrote a highly entertaining series of novels in the 1960's and '70's. Most are mysteries/thrillers mixed with sci-fi or the weird, some are more straightforward science fiction. The mysteries are not traditional whodunnits or detective stories. They usually contain a spooky element, and often deal with the theme or problem of identity (witness some of the titles: Who is Lewis Pinder?, What Did I Do Tomorrow?, Give Me Back Myself). Some of my own favorites, aside from Pinder, are The Shadow Before, Assignment Abacus, and The Paper Dolls. I highly recommend the novels of L.P. Davies to anyone looking for something different.
