Incognito does it again,
By Gareth Matthews (Portsmouth, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Who Needs Love (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of Incognito for many years and every time a new album comes out I look forward to the fresh stuff that comes out of the Incognito family. This album does not dissapoint, and delivers on style, sound and the unquestionable musical ability of every single person involved in this CD.The last album they released 'Life stranger than fiction' was a great album but only dissapointed me slightly in that there was only one track with live drums. This album I think seeks to reverse that slightly with much more in the way of a live sound - which give a chance for more exposure of the amazing drumming by Richard Baily and (a welcome return for) Andy Gangadeen. Coupling that with some of the best bass playing by Julian Crampton this album is a must for any jazz-funkers out there. I love 'Who needs love', 'Fly' and 'Cada dia'. The Incognito brass are always stunning - so no change on this album, and there is also a fair bit of quality flute playing by Andy Ross. The album also includes some slick dance tunes that I am sure will be a hit with clubbers and funk'ers alike. What I love about the Incognito sound is that every album features new players, new singers - which bring new sounds and new ideas. Matt Cooper co-writes a few songs and his fender rhodes playing in sooo good. This album also has some unexpected people helping Bluey out such as Paul Weller - but this all contributes to the variety of sound that Incognito produce. I probably don't need to mention that all the vocalists once again will blow you away - that is just something we come to expect with every Incognito release. Many new people are on this album and I especially like the lead vocals by Tony Momrelle on 'Cada dia' and Paige Lackey's BV's on 'If you want my love'. The production is as always superb and I think it is safe to say that this is one Incognito album that you do not want to miss out on!

I didn't get the previous Incognito cd that was released only in Europe, so it's been about five years since my ears have been blessed by new Incognito grooves. WNL is a great addition to the Incognito oeuvre. The music is five-star material and the lyrics are more thoughtful than a year's worth of top-ten pop songs. Where this CD falls a bit short is in the vocal fireworks. All the singers do a great job on all the songs, but none of the songs feature what I would consider a standout vocal performance. Incognito CDs have always had at least one explosive vocal performance on every album: Always There, Still A Friend of Mine, Labour of Love, etc. WHO NEEDS LOVE is missing that one song whose singing makes your ears dance. All very good, none electrifying, although the title track comes very very close. That said, the music is typical Bluey excellence, which is enough to merit four stars. Next time, Bluey, get Maysa for at least one track.

Bluey Does It Well...Again,

As usual with Incognito, it's a little bit of a lot of things (House, funk, lots of jazz, Brazilian flavor, etc.), all done excellently. The tracks with Kelli Sae offer some of the breeziest, prettiest vocals I've heard from an Incognito vocalist not named Maysa in a while.

better than some of their other albums,

I used to like Incognito with their early hits and album, but then lost interest, because the albums didn't convince me anymore. After a longer pause, I tried this one and it is really nice and mellow with the wonderful voice of JOY ROSE who should have a solo record too !:) Very good choice :) Kelli Sae is on it too. It's Incognito as you know it - one of their better albums though.

Getting Into The Groove,
By Marc200 (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Who Needs Love (Audio CD)
Over the years, Incognito has benefited greatly from the herculean vocal talents of Maysa Leak and Jocelyn Brown. That is probably why "100 Degrees and Rising" (featuring neither Maysa or Jocelyn) is their weakest effort and "No Time Like The Future" (featuring both divas) is their strongest. Bluey's grooves can become monotonous -- all groove and no substance -- without a distinctive voice to anchor the proceedings. So "Who Needs Love" (featuring neither Jocelyn nor Maysa) contains a few surprises. The highlight is STONE COLD HEART a smooth samba of a summer breeze that is capped with Joy Malcolm's aching vocal. Up-and-comer Kelli Sae adds spice to both the funky, Curtis Mayfield-esque PEOPLE AT THE TOP and the retro-soulful DON'T BE A FOOL. Likewise, Joy Rose livens up both CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD, with a neo-soul swagger similar to Jill Scott, and the club-stomper MORNING SUN which has already found its way onto several dance music compilations. Overall, "Who Needs Love" is very listenable and makes a strong case for Incognito as being more than the sum of its parts.

I feel cheated because I was such a fan I bought the 13-track version because it was released first, but now I see this 14-track version. What's up with that?

Incognito is back with its excellent, jazzy, soulful, funky style which is very difficult to resist for any music lover that followed incognito's music since their first hit-single "Always There".They sound fresh and new as always. With Jay Malcom's voice on the board again in STONE COLD HEART and IF YOU WANT MY LOVE. She sang on the "100 degrees and rising"(1995) and sounds great again. Stone Cold Heart is one of the best songs they ever recorded! It reminds me of Barumba..... Kelli Sae and Tommy Momralle sang on "Life, stranger than fiction" (2001). Kelli sings the third track "people at the top" and it's just fantastic! Third vocalist is Joy Rose who is a new comer for Incognito and with no surprise her voice is just righ for the band. This album sounds livelier than the last one and i'd dare to say it is one of the best that inocgnito realesed to this date. Get this record if you like them! For those who don't know this band but like jazz, funk, soul and dance i'd say don't hesitate - you won't be disappionted, it's worthy of every buck you spend on this CD!

Like its name implies, the group Incognito blends so many musical styles that it's next to impossible to categorize its music. Songs on this album run the gamut from dance ("Morning Sun", "Where Love Shines") to bossa nova ("Stone Cold Heart") to quiet storm ("IF You Want My Love", the seductive "Don't Be A Fool"). Fans of true jazz may delight in the neo-sound of "Byrd Plays" and "Blue (I'm Still Here With You").The album's highlight is arguably its shortest track, the bonus remix of "Can't Get You Out of My Head", a really funky little ditty that begs for an extended version. I don't know "WHO NEEDS LOVE". I do know that the music world needs more of the caliber of Incognito.
