PreSchool-Grade 3?Shadows and sounds of the night are colorfully presented in this, yet another addition to the Halloween poetry shelf. While there's nothing particularly new here, Who Said Boo? is a pleasing presentation. Carlstrom's rhymes are effective for reading aloud?with some especially nice sound effects included. Masquerading is a big theme here, always wondering who's behind the mask or who made that sound. In one poem, a lurking, ominous big black shadow turns out to be just daddy on the staircase. In another, that cryptic noise is only somebody snoring. Parents are ever present to protect against the demons of the unknown. In this book, Halloween is a playful time, with some underlying creepiness, of course, but mainly a time for fun, frolicking, and family. Alley's illustrations perk up the action as children visit a haunted house, carve a jack-o-lantern, and attend a Halloween carnival. Color bleeds off the pages, filling the entire spread. The faces of the youngsters evoke surprise and wonder delightfully. There's a whole lot of mood and activity packed into these pages. Ages 3^-6. The verse is simple, full of action, rhyme, and physicality that small kids will love. The watercolor pictures are very bright and very detailed; in fact, they are sometimes a bit too busy and too mixed-up for the audience. What toddlers will enjoy is the delicious scariness of somebody tapping at the window in "Haunted House" ("Are you afraid? ooo-ooo" ) and the nonsense rhyme of "Did Mama say Boo? / No, Mama said Shoe. . . ." Who Said Boo offers young readers a fun introduction to poetry which draws children in because the theme is Halloween- a child's favorite holiday. Included are examples of alliteration, appropriate repetition, rhyme and great rhythm. The poems include themes such as going to a Halloween party, watching shadows on the walls, carving pumpkins, trick-or-treating, and dressing up. The illustrations are colorful, very detailed, and extremely engaging for both children and adults alike. This book has been a favorite of my children and students year after year. It's a must for home and school libraries!

I think people "miss the boat" when they speak of BORING poems.

This book is a FEAST for the eye! The watercolors busy? Then so are those of some of our most wonderful painters. Grandma Moses, and Wysocki included. They are CHERISHED by our children.

I purchased the book when they were 2 and 5 and now in their teens...they STILL get it out on Halloween and read it!

I think "Momma Said Boo!" is silly and farce...and WONDERFUL.

I teach kindergarten and my class BEGGED for this book OVER and OVER!

I highly recommend it! Besides, what is SILLY and BORING to YOU is not always to the 5-year-old! Is it? Who are you trying to please here, anyway?

Our favorite Halloween book for the young around here!

This is definetly not a "Jesse Bear" typebook. Although my 3yr old boys enjoy it, it is painfull for ME toread. They are just words, nothing rymes and the stories are not enjoyable. The book is not "about" anyone (like Jesse) Some are just silly. I think my boys like the pictures, because there really is no story for them, or anyone their age, to follow. I would NOT recomend it, espically for anyone who likes the ryme books END
