Editorial Reviews

Review

Deep Purple: Ian Gillan (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards); Roger Glover (bass); Ian Paice (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. After establishing itself as a hard-rock giant, thanks to endless touring and the release of such milestone records as MACHINE HEAD and IN ROCK, Deep Purple was in a state of turmoil when it went into the studio to record 1972's WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE? Despite all the infighting, the band pulled together long enough to record seven tracks that only bolstered the band's reputation. The best-known song, "Woman From Tokyo," boasted a riff as memorable as the one that defined "Smoke on the Water" and was later admitted by Ritchie Blackmore to have been cribbed from Eric Clapton's "Cat Squirrel." Although Blackmore's always-impressive riffing stands out on such songs as "Mary Long" and "Place in Line," this album also spotlights how far Jon Lord's contributions on organ went toward defining the band's sound. Lord's mastery was such that in addition to the impressive solos on "Place in Line," his sweeping runs are the highlight of the stop-and-go "Rat Bat Blue." On this roller coaster ride of an album, the members of Deep Purple come together best on "Our Lady," a five-minute-plus epic driven by Lord's churning organ and Ian Gillan's Wagnerian vocals. --Muze

Product Description

1973's Who Do We Think We Are featuring Woman From Tokyo was another platinum venture for Deep Purple. While always being on top of their game, with multi-smash albums & huge concert tours, this was the last album to feature the legendary line-up of Gillian, Blackmore, Glover, Paice and Lord. The Friday Music catalog is no stranger to Deep Purple, and it is with great pride and honor to announce the Deep Purple 180 Gram Audiophile Series, as we kick things off with Who Do We Think We Are. Mastered from the original Warner Bros. tapes by Joe Reagoso.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best album with hidden great long songs., December 9, 2011
This review is from: Who Do We Think We Are (180 Gram Vinyl Reissue) (Vinyl)
This album contains long songs that blow away anything I've heard anywhere else. They are cerebral and driven music that was never played on the radio. They are almost a secret in Rock and Roll. If you love rock opera long music like Led Zeplin's Stairway to Heaven you will get here Deep Purples long play songs that never end in their satisfaction. Rat Back Blue & Place in Line I've played for hour after hour. Thank you Deep Purple for making these.

4.0 out of 5 stars into the fire, February 14, 2011
This review is from: WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE LP (Vinyl)
Why do I chose to coment about this album, and not other one from Mk II?

Well, besides being the first LP of Deep Purple that I ever put in my old Philco console record-player (with tubes!), I find WDWTWA the most "mature" product of that formation.

Superlative modulation and control in Gillan's voice. Plus outstanding keyboards by the Hammond Man, as always.

In a general view of Mk II, the uniqueness of Ian Gillan is not the well-know yelling, but the "storytelling mood" in his delivering of the songs.

Mary Long is a hypocrite...

"Who Do You think We Are" has always been one of my favorite Deep Purple Albums. From the opeing "My Woman From Tokoyo" to "Rat Rat Blue" every song is great. I highly recommend this album to anone. I have both the cd and new issues 180 gram vinyl and the vinyl sounds much better than the cd. If you have a vinyl record player I recommend that you buy the vinyl version of Deep Purple's "Who Do You think We Are"!
