5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite VGS album...
I got this CD in 97 after being introduced to VGS w/ "El Balie de los Locos." "Who is this is?" is their best in my opinion. I like every song on this one. My favorite is "Bossman," hard for anyone not to relate to the message. Ths music is fast, loud, hard; the horns are especially at the forefront most of the time on this album. I'd definitely recommend this album to...

2.0 out of 5 stars slow ska-core
I was really disappointed with this cd. I had heard good things, but after listening to it a few times, I finally had to accept that it just wasn't very good. THe Voodoo Glow-Skulls play dark, slow ska-core with a Mexican feel. It is just about as far from traditional ska as you can get, which I wouldn't mind, except the punk aspect of the music is pretty terrible as...

My favorite is "Bossman," hard for anyone not to relate to the message. Ths music is fast, loud, hard; the horns are especially at the forefront most of the time on this album. I'd definitely recommend this album to VGS newbie fans as a first listen, as it is so much different, and in my opinion better, than their newer releases.

After seeing them at a local punk show, this is their only album that really hits on that adrenaline.

4.0 out of 5 stars A diamond in the rough that is ska-core... and hey, Krillin's on the cover., March 27, 2006

Going back to my high school days, I used to love this album, and somehow it crossed the nation from its California home to my Alabama one and changed the way I looked at horn sections in punk bands. I then went from one ska band to the other, this was 1996, and then it blew up that summer, with Reel Big Fish and the Bosstones getting airplay on MTV. Then every hack in hacksville loved ska, but no one ever really picked up on this band. And now, looking back over a sea of music I have listened to and the styles of music I prefer now, this particular album, along with Let's Go Bowling's Mr. Twist, are the only ska constants I keep in rotation. I also noticed later that the bald character on the cover is none other than Krillin of Dragonball Z fame with a Saiya-jin suit on. That right there was ahead of the curb as Dragonball Z didn't catch on over here for another four years.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best VGS album EVER!!!!!, September 16, 1999

If you are at all questioning which VGS CD to buy, make it "Who Is This Is?"! This is VGS' peak! No other ska/punk/indie band can compare to VGS' sound on this CD. If you have any doubts just check out the sample of Insubordination. Just get it, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Voodoo glow skulls is one of the best ska bands of today. With a combination of punk as well this cd is a must! This is they're first cd, and is still as good as their newest one, if not the best one!

This Cd is awesome. There isn't a bad song anywhere on it. SOngs like insubordination and Country phuck make this CD worth it. I bought this CD in las vegas in ceasars palace, and i had never heard a song on it, but i didn't worry because these guys have trouble writing bad songs, but this cD is great. Good for anyone

4.0 out of 5 stars where's Brodie?, June 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Who Is, This Is? (Audio CD)
this CD was actually better than i expected. it's from back when they were on the old Dr. Strange label, and feels a lot more raw than their Epitaph recordings.this CD has some great songs like Dogpile and Too Many Secrets, but a couple songs (like Mother & Son) suck. also, Brodie Johnson, the trombone player, isn't with the band and they got some guy named Don playing another trumpet. a great CD, but buy Firme first.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Unsung Classic Ska-core Record, January 17, 2007
By
Dave Id (Flagstaff, Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Who Is, This Is? (Audio CD)
Voodoo Glow Skulls' masterpiece "Who is, This is?" became the definition of street influenced ska-punk. The high energy and in-your-face bravado made me realize that ska tunes could be as tough as any hardcore punk song. Catchy, heavy, and even funny; this album shows what the underground can do at its very best.

Though predated by their "We're Coloring Fun" and "The Potty Training Years" recordings, this was definitely the landmark album for the band. Dr. Strange himself has even said in interviews that this was the most successful selling album on the DSR label.

Every song on the record is vintage Voodoo. "Who is, This is?" is an unsung classic that really deserves more recognition than it has gotten. Here is a real ska-core gem that shouldn't be missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars VGS's finest, May 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Who Is, This Is? (Audio CD)
When the Voodoo Glow Skulls signed with the Epitaph label, they began to refine their unique, energy-driven ska into more melody driven songs. This Dr. Strange release is before they adapted to more mainstream ska and used pure adrenaline to get audiences into the music. This, in my opinion, is the VGS' finest release. The horns are powerful and loud and the rhythms are almost hardcore. The song "Insubordination" is worth the whole CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who Is This Is?, September 9, 2009
This review is from: Who Is This Is (Audio Cassette)
After making a mistake on my initial order, I was having issues getting in touch with the sender( Groove Time Records ). However, once they found out that I was having issues they promptly sent the CD instead of the tape that I accidentally ordered. They were very professional and followed up to make sure I was satisfied. I would recommend using Groove Time to anyone looking for music.
