This was my favorite book as a child - a gift from a family friend. I actually learned how to read when I was 4 1/2 with this book. I'm now expecting my first child and my mom bought it for him! I can't wait to read it together and hope he enjoys it as much as I did.

My preschool children love the animals and make animal sounds as they read the story with their parent.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Eye of the Beholder, February 9, 2007
This review is from: Who Took the Farmer's Hat? (Paperback)
I love this book. My 23 month old daughter loves this book. Yes, it's a well-written, well-paced, engaging story. And then there is the message which simply unfolds before you: the world we see depends on the world we know. Not everyone will see things the same way that you do.

I repeat, I love this book.

My daughter is a beginning reader. After completing "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons," she was able to jump right in and read all but 2-3 of the words in this book. The story and illustrations lend themselves to great questions about observation and reading comprehension.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute- a nice lesson about sharing, perceptions, and walking a mile in another creatures shoes, November 27, 2005
This review is from: Who Took the Farmer's Hat? (Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading this book to my own child, and he requested it again, which carries more weight with me than popularity and gimmicky-ness (I avoid digitally produced illustrations if at all possible). The illustrations in this book appear to be a combination of line, charcoal, and watercolor, and very unassuming, almost childlike themselves. The repetitive nature of the storyline allows the child to participate in the story whether by reading it or not, and predict the next event. In the end, one gets the feeling that all of the animals are conspiring with the bird in transforming the farmer's attitude about the importance of posessing his hat. We were all happy for the farmer that he got a new hat out of it, and for the bird that he got to keep his new nest!

A charming story of the adventures a farmer takes to find who took his hat and his sacrifice in the end.
