5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Doctor Who novel/audio guide, July 21, 2003

This review is from: I, Who 3: The Unauthorized Guide to Doctor Who Novels and Audios (Paperback)
This is the third volume in Lars Pearson's 'I,Who' series of reference books that provides details and reviews of Doctor Who books and audios. It also covers the Bernice Summerfield spin-offs (Bernice or 'Benny' was a companion in the 7th Doctor range of books published by Virgin in the 1990s). I have zero interest in Benny, so I avoid reading those sections. However, the Doctor Who material makes up the bulk of the book and makes it well worth purchasing.

As with Lars' previous volumes, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I don't always agree with the reviews but I can't deny that they are entertaining. Each synopsis is extremely thorough. I always find myself reading about a book I've already read and being reminded of details I missed the first time around or just plain forgot about.

This is the only series of books available that provide thorough and entertaining reviews of Doctor Who spin-off stories..and thankfully they are so good that there's no point in anyone else trying to publish similar guides. If you are a serious fan of Doctor Who books and/or audios, then these books are an essential purchase. I hope that we see many more volumes in the future.

Lars Pearson does it again with "I, Who 3". Continuing where "I, Who 2" left off, Mr. Pearson gives readers and Dr. Who fanatics more meticulously researched information about the Dr. Who Novels and Audio Adventures. One thing that should be mentioned when talking about the "I, Who" series is that the information in all of the books covers only the first 8 doctors. Hartnell, Troughtan, Pertwee, Baker, Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann.

In each of the "I, Who" books, Lars Pearson goes into wonderfully excruciating detail about all the Who novels and Audio stories and where they fit in with each other and with the TV series regarding continuity. Each novel and audio tale comes complete with an examination of the aliens involved, character analysis, character growth, previously undiscovered facts about Dr. Who and his various companions and enemies, facts about the TARDIS that might not have been previously known. It's all here to be savored in glorious detail. Again...a great success by Lars Pearson. Also worth mentioning about all the "I, Who" books including #3, is that Lars Pearson obviously loves Dr. Who. Everything and everyone in the Who'verse is treated with obvious care and love and nice helpings of tongue in cheek humor and delicious wit.

I've been a fan of Dr. Who for going on 3 decades now. But this book would warrant 5 stars simply for the sheer amount of painstaking research that goes into each volume. These books are not simply dry, clinical research about a character. These are far from the emotionless summaries one might find in "cliff notes". These are genuinely fun to read. It takes time to get through them because there is so much in this book to savor and enjoy. There is fascinating detail and as with "I, Who" pt 1&2..."I, Who 3" continues to carry on the fun experience of its two predecessors. I have to highly recommend this volume as well as the entire series.
