Amazon.com Review

The first version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire was the third bestselling game of 1999 and continues to fly off store shelves, so a sequel was inevitable. Who Wants To Be a Millionaire: 2nd Edition gives fans 600 more questions and brilliantly captures the feel of the TV show. The only thing missing is the cash.

The game was developed by Jellyvision, famous for its irreverent You Don't Know Jack series of trivia games. Although the designers didn't have much to work with considering how Spartan the set of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire is, they did a masterful job of simulating both the mechanics and the drama of the television show, wrapping everything up in a slick interface that is immediately recognizable.

It seems impossible that players could feel any tension playing Who Wants To Be a Millionaire: 2nd Edition when no real money is at stake, but the game's perfect pacing did a nice job of at least making us think we were playing for cash. That's because it doesn't deliver an immediate response when a question is answered. Just as in the game show, if you answer a question quickly host Regis Philbin will confirm or reject your answer quickly. As the game progresses and the questions get tougher there is more of a pause between your answer and the confirmation. Regis will make some comments, sometimes offering you the chance to change your mind by asking the now grating "Is that your final answer?" as the show's music and a drum roll build tension in the background. The delays were surprisingly unnerving, making us constantly second-guess our answers.

Should a question prove too tough you can always fall back on your three lifelines. The designers polled 50 random people to provide data for the "Ask the Audience" lifeline, and The Reege's friends dispense audio advice for the "Phone a Friend" option. Of course, the 50/50 lifeline is also available.

All these elements coalesce to form a surprisingly fun trivia game, and one of the few available that is more fun to play solo than with a group of friends (although playing cooperatively with a few buddies can be fun). Games rarely take more than 20 minutes, so it's perfect for a quick trivia fix--we just wish it came with more questions. Guess we'll have to wait for the flood of sequels that is sure to follow. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Atmosphere provides some tension
  • Near-perfect simulation of the hit TV show
  • Lifelines are implemented well
Cons:
  • Questions quickly run out
  • Doesn't come with a million dollars

Product Description

Is that your final answer? Regis Philbin really wants to know in WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE for the PlayStation. The world-famous television quiz show is perfectly represented in this game, with everything from the "Ask the Audience" to the "Phone a Friend" Life Lines. The game contains hundreds of questions that will keep players busy, as they get exponentially more difficult as the prize money increases. There is two-player support so gamers can recreate the action seen on the actual show including the popular "Fastest Finger" challenge. The graphics contain mostly pre-rendered scenes of the shows set in full 3D. Showcasing the great music and aura of the television show, WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE for the PlayStation captures the essence that makes the game so popular and puts it into a medium that everyone from children to adults are sure to enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Like the show, but Limited Questions and Slow Loading, August 17, 2000
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Who Wants To Be A Millionaire 2nd Edition (Video Game)
Let me say that I love trivia games, and I still love watching Who Wants to be a Millionaire on the tube. As for the playstation game though I have to say this. First of all the game has a very limmited variety of questions that start to repeat after only a few plays of the game making it bore to play after only a couple of days. Number two, this game could not load more slowly from question to question, its like sitting and waiting for your death. I can get a right answer and wait a full minute untill Regis is reading the next question, its just so slow you will want to scream. My advice, watch this one on the tube, leave the playstation game alone though. Try You Dont Know Jack on your computer or Playstation instead. Its a better triva game suited for at home play with pals.

3.0 out of 5 stars lots of fun, but not enough of it, July 9, 2000

Its a really fun game that follows the same theme of the show. The questions are harder and are fun to play with a group of people. But there are only 600 questions, and after a while they start to repeat themselves.Might be better for a rental then a buy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best of games...., December 3, 2000
This review is from: Who Wants To Be A Millionaire 2nd Edition (Video Game)
First of all, I don't know why this game has a 2 player option. Two people face off and only 1 person gets to play the game really. Some of the face off questions are so ridiculously hard that you will be guessing for a long time and the game will keep on telling you to try again and again before ending the game. It won't even give you the right answer at the end!! You should have the option to pass to a new question for the faceoff.

In the game, now this is where the playstation is showing it's age. The loading speed is VERY ANNOYING. The questions are repetitive after awhile. The phone a friend dialogues are amazingly cool and funny. Regis adds a few wise cracks and you got a less than average game. Not worth buying but go for a rental.
