5.0 out of 5 stars Yay! A book that normalizes homebirth!, September 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Who Was Born at Home? (Paperback)
You find out in Corie Feiner's bio at the end of the book that she's an award-winning poet, but by the time you get to the bio, you already know that; her prose has a joyful rhythm, and it's absolutely wonderful to read aloud, exactly as a children's book should be. Feiner's book beautifully normalizes homebirth for a broad audience, by sharing with the reader a cross-section of historical figures who were born at home - Elvis, Abraham Lincoln, Amelia Earhart, and others - and as a wonderful bonus, there's a glossary of sorts at the end in which we learn more about each of the figures in the book (a great feature, since that additional information might spark some children to do further research on figures that particularly interest them). If you had a homebirth, buy this book, as your child will absolutely love being able to relate his/her own birth story to a larger community! That said, although the book is particularly well-suited for children who were born at home, it would be an informative (and poetic) read for any child or adult. The language is just beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freedom is power!, November 7, 2011
This review is from: Who Was Born at Home? (Paperback)
Corie Feiner puts homebirth in an historical context linked to FREEDOM and places it powerfully in the present. The reality is, historically, everyone was born at home until around the mid 1900's. This book does an excellent job of normalizing a natural thing that has been marginalized by the medicalization of birth in our country that does not recognize, honor or value, the importance of a woman's birth experience or a baby's right of passage into this world. Corie's book does not preach the radical line I purport here but instead gently celebrates the choice to birth at home by linking that decision to the great freedom fighters and radical thinkers we must thank for the quality of our lives today, these American historical figures are proof of the ongoing struggle for freedom we all must continually fight. Choosing: Civil Rights movement leaders, an abolitionist, a feminist, a Caucasian pop star that was inspired by African American rhythms that birthed Rock&Roll, and an inventor who thought outside the box; we clearly see through lovely metered poetry full of great rhyme, vocabulary and history, a birth story that takes us home. Everyone will enjoy this book- and especially those most passionate about freedom. Freedom should start at birth folks, this book brings that message home. Thank you, Corie Feiner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for parents and children who select home birth, November 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Who Was Born at Home? (Paperback)
This is a beautifully written book with just lovely illustratrations. It will help parents connect their children to their own home birth. Although I gave birth to my two children in a hospital, I fully support home birth. This book puts home birth in historic perspective for both parets and children. My father's birth at home in an Brooklyn tenement in January 1916 was an oft told tale but the realization that this was the norm not the exception is not understood my most people. Even if you do not plan or have participated in a home birth, this will enlighten you. If you did, then this will provide a palatable historic perspective and initiate conversations with your children about the historic figures references in the book.
