Book Description

March 12, 2002

This is not your ordinary baseball trivia quiz book. Mike Attiyeh, semi-finalist in the annual trivia contest of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), has assembled a unique collection of over 300 in-depth questions on topics as challenging as the game itself. From accomplishments on the field to anecdotes from the dugout, from baseball's earliest days to the 2001 major league season, Attiyeh presents an assortment of questions, including trivia, matching, fill-in-the-blanks, true or false, and fill-in-the-lineup. The quizzes are complemented by "Did You Know?" sections, which offer hundreds more facts, figures, and stats.

Who was the only player to play in all 44 New York Yankees--Brooklyn Dodgers World Series games?

Did you know that Ted Williams is the only distinguished major leaguer to participate in World War II and the Korean War?

Those up to the task can take the "Managerial Challenge": two full "seasons" of 162 questions. Answer enough correctly and qualify for the postseason and more rounds of play-off and World Series--caliber posers. Answer too few correctly and it's back to the minors!

What do Babe Ruth, Waite Hoyt, Wally Schang, Herb Pennock, Carl Mays, and Everett Scott have in common?

Did you know that Dizzy Dean once shut out the Boston Braves without taking a sign from his catcher?

But even novice fans, not up to the challenge, can enjoy the vast scope of material covered by Attiyeh. Who Was Traded for Lefty Grove? is a must-have for every fan of the game.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Attiyeh presents each answer as a mini-essay on relevant aspects of baseball history. Included are biographical details, player perspectives, team performances, heroic accounts, pitching duels, descriptions of specific games, and statistics... The gamut of questions includes facets of the game's basic history as well as information on the major and minor leagues, Negro leagues, and women's leagues... Trivia may well be unimportant, worthless information. But Attiyeh's presentation offers every level of baseball enthusiast an enjoyable and challenging learning opportunity for experiencing the game's long and colorful history." -- Jerry Wright, www.haroldseymour.com (The Official Home of Baseball Historian Dr. Harold Seymour and the SABR Seymour Medal Award)

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book, June 13, 2004

This review is from: Who Was Traded for Lefty Grove?: Baseball's Fun Facts and Serious Trivia (Paperback)
A great book with one flaw: no index. It should be federally mandated that any baseball book of facts - especially one as well researched as this one - come with an index. Otherwise, the highest recommendation.

This review is from: Who Was Traded for Lefty Grove?: Baseball's Fun Facts and Serious Trivia (Paperback)
This is a book for the thinking fan. This is not some ordinary, garden variety baseball trivia book. Rather, this book is filled with an amazing amount of research and it is borne out in the facts and figures that accompany every "question" in the book. Each question serves in part as part of a trivia game, but also simply is the header for detailed discussions on a wide variety of very interesting topics related to the history of the game. A definite must-read for any baseball fan, and a great holiday gift!
