More About the Author

Born in Germany in 1928, I was sent to a children's home in Switzerland at the age of ten which became an orphanage for most of the German Jewish students who had been sent there to escape the Holocaust. At 17 I went to Israel where I fought for the country's independence as a member of the Haganah, the Jewish freedom fighters. I then moved to Paris where I studied at the Sorbonne and taught kindergarten. I immigrated to the U.S. in 1956 and obtained my Masters Degree in Sociology from the Graduate Faculty of the New School of Social Research. In 1970, I received a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in the Interdisciplinary Study of the Family from Columbia University Teacher's College.
My work at Planned Parenthood is what prompted me to further my education in human sexuality by studying at New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center.
My TV show Sexually Speaking first aired in 1980 as a 15-minute taped show, which then increased in popularity and became a nationally syndicated radio show.
In recent years, I have made regular appearances on the PBS Television children's show Between the Lions as "Dr. Ruth Wordheimer" in a parody of my therapist role, in which I help anxious readers and spellers overcome their fear of long words.
Currently I am an Adjunct Professor at N.Y.U. and an Associate Fellow of Calhoun College at Yale University, where I teach a course on the American family. I am also a Fellow of Butler College at Princeton University, where I will teach a course on the Jewish family. In addition to having my own private practice I am a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and frequently lecture at universities across the country.

5.0 out of 5 stars My kids love this book!, January 11, 2005
This review is from: Who Am I? Where Did I Come From? (Pop-Up Book) (Board book)
This book is open, honest, colorful and presents all the pertinent info in a fun and non-threatening way to children who are naturally curious!

I like that it depicts pple of different races, sizes and shapes. The 'lift the flaps' format never fails to amuse the kids. Giggles, shrieks of laughter and definate learning are guaranteed.

It is not overly 'graphic' in nature nor does it shy away from using the proper terminology or offering up the facts of creation.

Dr. Ruth has done a great job of presenting the 'need to know' facts at an age appropriate level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read To My 4-year Old, August 7, 2007
This review is from: Who Am I? Where Did I Come From? (Pop-Up Book) (Board book)
Eeks! Yes, I found this book & purchased it when my daughter was three thinking that I had years of waiting before I pulled it out of the closet shelf. But we read this book together when she was four (just two months shy of her fifth birthday). My daughter kept asking me "How do women get pregnant?" and after delaying the question countless times, I thought it was better to sit down and have "the talk" rather than keep fielding her questions. I was so nervous and anxious, but I said, "Do you want to learn how women get pregnant?" and she responded, "YES!!!".
The book was tastefully written and explained things factually and in a way as to not create an embarrassing situation. When I told people that I bought a pop-up sex education book, eyebrows were raised. The book has flaps to open, a baby in utero moves its feet & head - that is the extent of the pop-up factor. This makes it more interactive and it is now my daughter's favorite book. What is nice is that the issue of 'privacy' is addressed. Couples don't try to make a baby in public and privacy should be respected.
My daughter knows the birds and bees now and is comfortable with it. She does not go around telling her friends nor does she think it is something 'nasty' or 'unnatural'. I would rather have her learn the facts of life from her parents than from her peers.
The book also explains that the couples are married and 'love each other very much' before they try to have a baby. While some may view this as 'conservative', I think it is refreshing.

Good friendly text, mild, but to the point, good illustrations, fun pop-ups (nothing weird-please!), not the kind that kids tend to rip. Also includes various ethnicities in illustrations. Dr. W knows how to say enough, not scary or intimidating, not icky. Get this one if you can, it is GREAT. Kids want to see, and will like this.Who Am I? Where Did I Come From? (Pop-Up Book)
