4.0 out of 5 stars Who He Is- Cary Brothers-Who You Are, July 30, 2007
This review is from: Who You Are (Audio CD)
No, it's not the Cary Brothers, it's Cary Brothers... and you won't miss the imaginary twin. Who You Are is a soulful album with an Indie Rock heart. At first glance you might think its one of a long stream of melancholy guitar-heavy existentialist alt-pop sound-alikes but listen and Cary will surprise you with his passion and lingering melodies.

Especially worth noting are the bluesy aching Blue Eyes (Bonus Song), beautiful wistful Jealousy with its great piano riffs, the gorgeous lyrics and melody of Glass Parade, and the delicate guitar melodies of the Thompson Twins cover If You Were Here. Although all of Cary's melodies are strong, I didn't care for some of the lyrics (Honestly)- how many songs about love gone bad, getting stoned and drowning yourself in whiskey can you listen to? Same for Think Awhile. The majority however are thoughtful confessions mainly from the heart. In the title track as well as in the Thompson Twins cover Cary gives a nod to the bands of the mid-80's, a growing trend that gen X and admirers will enjoy.

If you like Coldplay or Dashboard Confessional, give this CD a listen as well. You just might find Who You Are is something worth holding on to.

O.K. Call me a stage mother, but this is a great CD. Even Jason Castro was hoping to sing 'Blue Eyes" by Cary Brothers as his next song on AMERICAN IDOL...unfortunately, he lost out!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Ride, August 18, 2009

This review is from: Who You Are (Audio CD)
Cary Brothers' "Who You Are" is authentically simple, warms your heart with lyric and melody, and brings on fully-felt reminders of a beautiful summer's day. It's pop-rock at its best. Cary's gripping and sensually-honest vocals and songwriting flourish within the beautiful melodies. Throughout the album are hints of numerous generation wonders such as U2, The Cure, and ColdPlay. With his songs having played on numerous television shows such as NBC's "Scrubs", FOX's "Bones", and "Grey's Anatomy", most likely you have heard his music. It is music deserving of much more airplay. No over-production here; it is mostly organic sounds with tinges of electronic effects. Producer Chad Fischer thankfully does not appear to manipulate Brothers' talent in the studio because the heart and soul that went into the album was captured and comes through in the audio. The highlights are: "Ride" [from 2006's "The Last Kiss" soundtrack]; "Honestly", a very down-tempo mellowing vibe with touching lyrics and melodies; the slickly hooked and grooved "Think Awhile"; "All the Rage" a mellow, smooth, sensually spacious re-release track from Brother's EP [taking a well-deserved place on the album]; and "Precious Lie", a poignant beautiful song that takes the album out - at least until the secret final track, "Blue Eyes" makes its way as track fourteen. Who You Are is a must-listen. "Who You Are" is a definite keeper in my music collection.
