Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In his witty debut, marketing consultant Greene offers sound and entertaining advice to 20-somethings on the job market. Though his tips could apply equally to the arts and nonprofit worlds, Greene reassures indie types that they can find rewards in the corporate sphere without being a secretly dissatisfied, self-important corporate tool who own[s] a lot of Dockers but [doesn't] wear the pants. Enlivening his wide-ranging advice with comical pop culture references from the '80s to today, Greene organizes the guide in quick, attention-grabbing chapters that can be easily read during commercial breaks. He coaches job seekers on how to pimp their résumés (think of cover letters like DVD cases—both must immediately catch the reader's eye); on how to score an interview by treating it like a first date (both involve varying levels of anticipation, conversation, humiliation, and [if you get lucky] consummation); and on the importance of solidifying one's professional identity (like a great band that has defined its sound) rather than being afraid of closing the door on various interests. This refreshing take on the job search guide for recent grads supplies career-advancing tactics in a humorous, easy-to-digest format.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious - and helpful, January 22, 2008
By Will F "Will F" (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
"Whoa My Boss is Naked" is a must read for anyone who wants to kick their career quest into high gear, and have a damn fun time along the way.

I've always had this dilemma when I walk into a bookstore: to entertain, or to educate? On the days I am feeling ambitious, I try walk out with anything that will make me smarter. These books almost always end up with a dog ear on page 37 sitting on my bedside table for 18 months. When I buy something entertaining, on the other hand, I rip through its pages and finish the book wanting it to last another 300 pages. The problem is I don't think I am going to be the warden at Azkaban - or a football recruiter at Ole Miss - any time soon.

This book does the impossible - it entertains and educates. I finished "Whoa My Boss is Naked" in one sitting, laughing the whole way.

With Greene's help, I remembered that even though "Top Chef" is a fantastic reality show, and even though Padma is so hot she would make me a walking QuickFire Challenge, you don't get anywhere in life sitting on the couch and watching it all happen. You stand up, get out there, and take control of your life. Marcel may be the world's biggest douche bag - and he sure as hell thinks he can cure cancer with a huckleberry foam. But he made a choice in life: he started at the bottom, washing dishes and cutting carrots. And here he is, in his late twenties, on national television preparing meals for the very people who will make his lifelong dream come true.

As a long time sufferer of Midas-itis, Greene's message resonated with me throughout the book. I finished "Whoa My Boss Is Naked" laughing out loud, ready to put my Ivy League ego in a drawer and make Padma forget about that Salman Rushdie putz.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy!, January 22, 2008
By Jeff Rollins "Jeff" (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews
I just finished reading this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. While I was reading, my wife kept asking me why I was laughing out loud so much....I told her it was because this book was very funny and reminded me when I was first looking for a job. I am living my dream job and this book reaffirmed that! I look forward to reading more books from this author.
