5.0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC COUNTRY!!, September 17, 2005
This review is from: Whoevers in New England (Audio CD)
One look at the gorgeous cover and you know its going to be "real country" you're listening to!! This is one CD you should judge by its cover because its just as beautiful inside as it is on the outside. Reba rarely does better than she did here!!! My favorite song on here is "You Can Take the Wings off Me" followed by "If You Only KNew". But the entire release is perfection!

4.0 out of 5 stars Reba, the Diva of Country, January 9, 2001
This review is from: Whoevers in New England (Audio CD)
A good album from Reba...actually very good. Well, what album of Reba's isn't? She always comes through with great songs. Her voice is strong and quite capable of singing sad, heartfelt ballads as she is at belting out songs with attitude. "Whoever's in New England" was a big hit for her, and a beautiful song. Recorded in 1986, this album showcased an up and coming Reba...a promise of more and more great things to come. If you're a new-to-Reba fan, check out this and some of her other older albums. You won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Emergence of a New Country Female Identity, May 2, 2000

This review is from: Whoevers in New England (Audio CD)
Country singers are a dime a dozen, but shining stars like Reba are rare. I don't care about sales or popularity: it wouldn't matter to me if Reba has sold 100 million recordings or just 100. She's honest, spontaneous and comfortable with all types all music. Every once in a great while the singer, the band and the selection of compositions come together and create something distinctive and inspired.

Whoever's In New England didn't turn country music upside-down, and it isn't revolutionary, but it did bend the rules for country ladies. This CD is a trendsetter. The traditional "stand-by-your-man" attitude is replaced by intelligence and independence. Reba took a chance with the dance-tempo `Little Rock.' Sure it's a cheatin' song, but it's a cheatin' song by a women about a women. Instead of the dumb, barefoot and pregnant stereotype, the character in `Whoever's In New England' is an intelligent and urban lady who's married to an executive. Reba is sensitive (Don't Touch Me There) and vulnerable (You Can Take The Wings Off Me), but most significantly she's "independent and free" (If You Only Knew). Whoever's In New England signaled the emergence of a new country female identity: bright, independent and confident. Stand aside Tammy - Reba has arrived.

Technical note: The original MCA CD (1986) is also one of the first digital recordings.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE REBA I LOVE...NO FLUFF HERE!!, September 28, 2005

The outside of the CD says it all....pure country music right down to the soul. This CD is definitely a keeper and all the songs on it are pure gold!! Reba should have stuck to doing stuff like this. George Strait and Patty Loveless have remained true to stuff like this and they're still making and winning awards for their records. They are evergreens in the industry because they never compromised the way Reba did. That said, I say enjoy this CD because its one of the few CDs in the traditional vein that defines her persona!!

5.0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY OUTSTANDING!!, September 14, 2005

If this was Reba's first million selling album it was for good reason! No filler here at all! One of the best she ever did. I still recall hearing "Whoever's In New England" for the first time and I was mesmerized. The rest of the songs on here could easily have been hits as well. A well deserved 5 star rating!

5.0 out of 5 stars Reba's first million selling album, February 13, 2004
This review is from: Whoevers in New England (Audio CD)
Having recorded four ultra-traditional country albums (My kind of country, Have I got a deal for you, The last one to know, Merry Christmas to you), Reba began to move back towards pop-country with this album, although this is still a solidly traditional country album compared to most of Reba's music. This album features electric guitars and drums but is otherwise a very traditional country album.

There are two up-tempo songs here - Little Rock (the second single off the album, after the title track) and I can't stop now. Both are excellent. One thin dime is a wonderful mid-tempo song.

The seven ballads are all brilliant but the title track is by far the most famous. One reviewer suggested it was about an intelligent woman waiting for her executive husband to come home and suggested that this is not another of those stand-by-your-man songs. Actually, it sounds to me as though the woman in the song is standing by her man, knowing that he's up to no good in New England, even if he is an executive. Reba obviously believes this too, having once said that she wouldn't put up with a man like the one in the song. Nevertheless, Reba recorded it because it's a great song. So it proved, becoming one of her signature songs.

This is definitely an album for country fans who like to hear her sing traditional country music.

In 1986 She Had Her First Video Hit "Whoever's In New England" Which Won 2 Video Of The Year Awards In 1986, And 1987. "Little Rock" Which Collin Raye Did Another Virson Of The Same Name In 1994, Is Also A Great Song. If You Also Like "I've Seen Better Days" This CD Is A Must Have.

The CD was excellant and had a variety of music and songs on it. Reba McEntire is a great singer and I love all of her CDs. The music was great because it was up beat and with the 90's. Reba, you rock!
