Book Description

August 24, 2001
One of the most fascinating experiments in American literature resulted in The Whole Family. This unusual composite novel numbers among its twelve authors such luminaries as Henry James, William Dean Howells, Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, and Elizabeth Stuart Phelps.
The idea for this collaborative venture originated with Howells in 1906. Under the guidance of Elizabeth Jordan, the energetic editor of Harper’s Bazar (as it was then known), each of the authors was invited to write a successive chapter in a story Howells envisioned as a definitive depiction of American family life. But the original plan underwent a dramatic reversal with a controversial chapter by Freeman. From that point, The Whole Family became a more involved story of family misunderstandings and rivalries that actually mirrored the rivalries of the contributors themselves.
Alfred Bendixen’s lively introduction offers the first accurate and complete account of the creation of this remarkable novel—uncovering new facts and revealing the turmoil out of which it was shaped. June Howard’s foreword provides an additional contextual and critical perspective.
The Whole Family will be enjoyed by admirers of American literature at the start of the twenty-first century as much as it was by those at the beginning of the twentieth. In addition to delightful plot twists and characters, it offers a remarkable view into the ways in which family life has—and has not—changed over the course of a century.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Written by 12 American authors, including William Dean Howells, Henry James, and Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, and published in 1908, this novel centers on the romantic attachmentsand detachmentsof the young daughter of the Talbert family. Out of this unpromising plot an engaging story emerges when Freeman transforms the old-maid aunt into a liberated woman and makes her the rival of the younger niece. Writing successive chapters, each author playfully creates problems for the next, and much of the fun lies in watching the writers extricate themselves from one trap and then set another. The Whole Family is an intriguing period piece, an illuminating example of differing conceptions of narrative, and enjoyable to read. Leland Krauth, English Dept., Univ. of Colorado, Boulder

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable experiment in writing, April 19, 2006

This review is from: The Whole Family: A Novel by Twelve Authors (Paperback)
This novel was enjoyable to read. Each of the twelve writers takes a family member and tells the story of a daughter's engagement through through their eyes. The story flows together pretty well, except for the piece written by Henry James. I thought it bogged down there, and the tone was much too somber compared with the rest of the book. However, you can easily skim over that chapter and still understand the plot. I'm glad I read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Book, August 13, 2009
I am very happy to see this book available on the Kindle and to see that people are reading it! When I read it some years ago, I found it so fascinating that I did a lot of research on it, and ended up writing an entire book of cultural history. There's a whole tradition of novels written in this way, each author writing one chapter. Readers of the Kindle edition might want to know that the paper reprint also includes supporting materials that tell you a lot about the authors and about the process by which this quirky book was produced--it was originally serialized in Harper's Bazar (as the name was spelled then--same magazine though). And the contributors had a lot of disputes; the correspondence is quite funny. (Warning: self-promotion follows) Duke University Press has published both the novel (ed. Alfred Bendixen, with a short foreword by me) and my book, which is titled Publishing the Family--of course there's a short description on Amazon--pretty specialized, but I try to make it interesting! My sister advises that any readers who are not professional scholars should skip the introduction. :)

3.0 out of 5 stars The Whole Family, October 6, 2011

It was interesting that so many different authors could write in the same style.
Humorous to see the situation from each point of view.
I thought it would be a novel with each author building on the what the other had written, when really it was one situation told by each character.
