This review is from: The Whole Person Fertility Program(SM): A Revolutionary Mind-Body Process to Help You Conceive (Paperback)
Niravi B. Payne writes this book after having worked with infertility patients for about 50 years. This book helps women and their partners explore and release psychological blockages, which might be the reason a couple cannot conceive. The message is non blaming and encouraging. A lot of helpful excercises, sample stories and research data are included. I loved the book and found the content very helpful. Niravi B. Payne does not discredit physical problems but puts the women into a context of body and mind. She addresses the much neglected psychological side of infertility - the patient is a whole system of mind and body. Healing the past and the current realtionship with yourself and your partner will leave you to an internal peace and increased chances of conceiving a pregnancy.

I whole-heartedly recommend this book and its results. In addition to reading this book I went through about two years of therapy with Niravi, which changed my life. I think the readers who interpreted what she is saying with the attitude that if you don't get pregnant by following what she suggests, that it's all in your mind, and it's your fault, have it all wrong. That is exactly the thinking that I was stuck in, and had created as a self-blame mechanism that I carried around with me all of my life. Her goal is not to have you blame yourself, but to look at your life and try to understand how and why you have come to have the beliefs that you do, which may not be your fault at all. They can be very strong family influences, work influences and society influences that keep you and your mind locked in patterns of behavior that affect how your body responds to stress, illness or disease. I believe the mind has a huge affect on your health and how well your body works, and I believe medicine is only just starting to catch on to this idea. That is the basis for Niravi's program. I finally examined how I was really living my life and whether that way was compatible with what I was saying was my goal to have a baby. My life was not compatible with having a baby before I worked with Niravi. I tried for 10 years to get pregnant. I finally forgave myself for all the mistakes and failures, but it took a long time to do. I am now 7 1/2 months pregnant, which I had not expected to happen. I give a lot of credit to Niravi for helping me stop blaming myself and to get on with my life. Hope she can help you too.

a book for the thinking woman.,

I bought this book because I have been married for 10 years and have no children with my husband, I had a teenage pregnancy and placed my daughter with an adoptive family. I have no diagnosis as to why I can't conceive. According to Doctors there is nothing wrong, go home relax, try weight watchers. This is the first book that looks at the emotional baggage we all carry. For the first time I am dealing with my infertility not as a physical unknown problem but as a layered emotional wall that stands between me and my future children. For those of us who think about and feel things deeply there is a lot that can be learned from this book. Our childhood follows us into adulthood, even if we tell it not too. Our teenage years of rebellion continue into our adulthood long after we have had our last emposed curfue. Some how we are still rebelling against our parental influences just on another level. "I won't ever be a parent like mine were." "I don't hold the same truths about children and growing up that my parents do." "I'll never be as good a parent as my parents think I should be." This book allows you to systematically look into all the corners of your heart and find out what is really preventing you from moving into the next stage of living. I am really glad that I took the chance on this book. I highly recommend it for all those who over think things and tend to have strong emotions that run deep on most subjects.

Not for everyone,

This review is from: The Whole Person Fertility Program(SM): A Revolutionary Mind-Body Process to Help You Conceive (Paperback)
I purchased this book since I haven't been able to conceive after many years of trying, and it was recommended in "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom". I believe in the mind/body connection but there is an inherent risk in focusing on this: we feel even MORE guilty when we don't conceive since it MUST be in our minds! This book is written in a very positive, supportive tone, however.I was turned off by the focus on older, "professional" infertile women and lesbian couples. Why not give examples of a more average type of woman? I understand that these minority groups need support and perhaps their stories exemplified what the author was trying to convey, but I just couldn't relate to them. I also have a hard time believing that the mind is to blame for all ailments. One example is a woman with "hard" eggs who became a softer person and got pregnant. Please! Perhaps unbalanced hormones are caused by an unbalanced psyche but I hesitate to blame my "family patterns" for my fibroid, polyps and blocked tubes. I tried doing the suggested exercises but found myself yawning and procrastinating. Hopping on the wings of a butterfly...all I could think of was that the butterfly's wings were going to break and I would fall to my death in the lovely meadow below. I would only recommend this book to women who have unexplained infertility, especially older women.

A lot of theory and little substance,
This review is from: The Whole Person Fertility Program(SM): A Revolutionary Mind-Body Process to Help You Conceive (Paperback)
This book tries to establish a relationship between your frame of mind and your ability to conceive. While stress may not help your chances I do not believe that somehow something in your past blocks an egg from being fertilised just like that. No evidence is provided that this happens.
There are plenty of people with trauma and unhappy backgrounds who have had no problems in bearing children. There are also plenty of people who are well balanced, have had happy marriages and childhoods who have difficulty in conceiving. I felt that in a subtle way this book encourages people toward self blame and encourages a mentality that you can make it happen if you really want to. This is not always the case, sometimes despite all efforts by all concerned it just doesn't happen. In most of the client cases in the book the female solves her emotional baggage and then just gets pregnant. Get real. I much prefer "Conquering Infertility" by Alice Domar. I feel this book is much more substantiated, more realistic in recognising that it may not happen but uses the mind body approach to manage the inevitable stress of fertility treatment.

Whole Person Fertility Program,
This review is from: The Whole Person Fertility Program(SM): A Revolutionary Mind-Body Process to Help You Conceive (Paperback)
If you are struggling with fertility and you think you are just a body, think again. We are mind/body/spirit. While it's vital to address the physical factors that can contribute to infertility, for some people your emotional baggage can play a role as well. Niravi explains how the mind/body link works, and gives practical ways for you to release any negativity which you might be holding onto in your physical body. It's an approach more and more doctors should be taking notice of. If people can treat their "whole person" - not just their body - it's a much faster way through! Very exciting.

This book is out of print and Niravi Payne died this past year. I trained with her and found that this perspective was significant in helping fertility clients. I worked with a client couple who had an abortion together before their marriage. After they performed the grief ceremony Niravi describes, they conceived their son a few days later! I can't say all clients had this dramatic of an experience, but I use it to illustrate the possibility. While I have to agree that Niravi's book was highly anecdotal (and as I read it again I can be very critical of this), knowing her and having implemented her work in my own life and the lives of clients, I do believe that this perspective can be the missing link for many. Realistically, it may take more than reading the book to implement this program, but Niravi and her referral network are gone. I have come to believe that our toxic environment is a big player in the larger fertility crisis, and I worked on both the physical and emotional levels when trying to conceive my own second child. I was highly successful, becoming a mother again at age 48! My age isn't as important as what I learned from Niravi: I didn't believe my age determined whether I could conceive again and so did not quit and give up as most women in my position would. Niravi's book is also dated as it focused on baby boomers, the last of whom are passing out of their childbearing years. But if you are attracted to this book and can get a used copy, have a look. Flawed as it is, almost no where else will you find this information. And P.S.: Dr. Christiane Northrup used Niravi and her work in the fertility chapter of her original Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom.

I've *actually* read the entire book and it's a peice of trash, I actually threw it away it disgusted me so much. The author said that if you don't tell people you're pregnant your baby will think he/she is not wanted and you can miscarry because of that! Unbelievably ignorant, this author has obviously never dealt with miscarriage or infertility. I picked up this book thinking it would have natural remedies(you know like herbs) and it's a lot of meditations and visualizations which is fine and good for anyone trying to conceive but with infertility I don't care how many times I pray to buddah it's just not going to happen without a doctor's help. Don't waste your time on the rest of the book, it's not worth it and they wouldn't give a huge preview if it was
