Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Over 100 recently published articles are reprinted in this well-organized compilation. Grouped sequentially by subject, the articles are each written by an expert or practitioner working in the field. Patterned on George Eberhart's classic series "Whole Library Handbooks" (ALA), these articles have been culled from books and professional publications dealing specifically with library issues. Most chapters open with an introduction gleaned from ALA's Information Power (1998). The history segment spotlights (with photos when possible) about 50 school librarians instrumental in bringing school libraries into the 21st century. The materials chapter digs into selection, security, and audience issues. Program, promotion, and funding issues are covered nicely, as are topics relating to copyright and general intellectual freedom, libraries and test score data, and access. Nuggets of gold can be unearthed here by reading pieces by in-the-trenches school librarians. The multiple acronyms listed up front are helpful, and the list of school library-related periodicals is comprehensive, as is the index. A useful reference tool.-Mary R. Hofmann, Rivera Middle School, Merced, CA

From Booklist

Patterned after George Eberhart's The Whole Library Handbook (ALA, 2000), this book features articles and book parts compiled for students and school library media specialists. Selections are organized in 15 categories that cover such topics as the history of school libraries, school librarianship as a profession, evaluation, technology, programming, and funding. Clear writing and astute insights mark the selections, each of which concludes with a complete journal or book citation. More coverage of reading enjoyment, reading aloud, and readers'-advisory services for children would have been helpful. The use of clip art to illustrate the selections is not an enhancement. Nevertheless, the book is recommended for school library media specialists, their administrators, and library-school students. Sharon E. Cohen

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Getting Started Text, June 8, 2007
This review is from: The Whole School Library Handbook (Paperback)
The Whole School Library Handbook is a great find for new school librarians or graduate students who would like an introductory overview to the school library profession. The editors have compiled previously published articles in a handy, easy-to-read reference. I always tell my graduate students that this book is a keeper; a resource that they can refer back to in a time of need as they are developing collections, managing their school libraries, locating funding, promoting their library programs, or advocating for their positions as instructional leaders. The Handbook also provides a history of school libraries and a list of outstanding leaders in the field of school librarianship which deepens the students' understanding of how influential their roles as school librarians can be. This book is a great launching pad for discussions and directing students to additional resources.
