It is quite clear that Cal Bennett has Jazz in his soul. There isn't one like him among popular Jazz musicians these days. He manages to combine the flair of current Jazz styles with the deep improvisation of earlier years, something which this older reviewer appreciates.
One of the best examples of his great musical balance is found in "Whole Soul Stroll" from the album "Live At The Blue Note Las Vegas". Cal has fun with this song, which sort of reminds me of Coltrane in earlier times of his life. If you want to know Cal Bennett the musician, then you really need to get this one song and you'll be hooked! |
