This is a thoroughly revised version of Feuerstein's The Essence of Yoga (1974, o.p.). The author, an authority on Hinduism, uses Jean Gebser's model of structures of consciousness to distinguish transcendent from holistic spirituality. After examining these types in detail regarding the religious traditions that supported one or the other, Feuerstein suggests practices to foster each practice. Developing an East/West dialog and creating understanding of Hindu tradition are the chief focus of the book. Public libraries with large Hindu and New Age holdings should purchase.
