About the Brand

Wholesome Sweeteners brings the very best of nature's sweetness to you and your family every day. Wholesome believes in traditional ways, artisanal products and a very light environmental footprint. After searching the world for the best products, Wholesome has focused on the tropics, where the climate and conditions are just right for growing organic sweeteners. With Fair Trade Certified™ organic and natural sweeteners from Central and South America and Africa, Wholesome is committed to making the world a sweeter place, one spoonful at a time.

Company Overview

  • Founded in 1995 in Sugar Land, Texas, Wholesome Sweeteners supplies the American market the highest quality natural and organic sweeteners from around the world.
  • Wholesome Sweeteners pioneered efforts to bring sugar and honey into the Fair Trade movement and was the first to bring Fair Trade Certified sweeteners to American markets. Wholesome Sweeteners now offers a wide range of Fair Trade Certified, organic and natural sweeteners produced by traditional methods from nature’s best resources.

Fair Trade Certification is a promise that:
  • Farmers’ cooperatives are paid directly (no middlemen).
  • The members receive a fair and reliable set price for their crops.
  • The cooperative has access to loans and additional premiums for community and business development.
  • It’s trade, not aid. Cooperatives decide how the money is invested; the only stipulation is that every member has a vote in how the inves™ent is made.

Social Responsibility
The Fair Trade Certified™ logo represents Wholesome's commi™ent to consumers that a fair premium price is paid to the farmers’ cooperatives that supply Wholesome’s Fair Trade products.

Since initiating the Fair Trade Certified program in 2005, Wholesome Sweeteners has paid more than $800,000 directly to Fair Trade cooperative partners in Costa Rica, Malawi, Mexico and Paraguay. Fair Trade means that farmers can send their kids to school, keep their land, develop the quality of their harvest and build thriving communities.

Beyond the parameters of Fair Trade Certification, Wholesome selects suppliers based on a demonstrated commi™ent to social responsibility and community outreach.

Environmental Responsibility
Wholesome Sweeteners' ethos is shaped by a deep concern for the long-term health of the planet and all of its inhabitants.

The USDA Organic logo is Wholesome's promise that we hold every product to the highest environmental standard. Each product bearing the USDA Organic logo has been grown and milled to USDA Organic standards, without the aid of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or chemicals.

Wholesome uses traditional methods:

  • Fair Trade certification includes a commi™ent to sustainable agriculture. In recent years, unprecedented acreage has been converted from conventional agriculture to organic cultivation, reducing exposure to pesticides, herbicides and fungicides.
  • From the seed stock to harvest, our sugar cane is cultivated and harvested by hand and grown without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides.
  • Wholesome’s cane fields are never burned. During the harvest, trimmings are allowed to stay where they fall, decomposing naturally, returning nutrients to the soil, helping protect topsoil and ground water and providing habitat for wildlife.
  • At the small mills in Costa Rica, Malawi and Paraguay, our sweeteners are made simply and the spent sugar cane, called bagasse, is often recycled as fuel to generate electricity for the mill and nearby villages.
  • Deep in Southern Mexico’s jungles, honeybees browse on lush wildflowers without exposure to antibiotics or chemicals.

The next day your sugar will be soft.

The box of six packages of brown sugar were very fresh, not hard as some store brands that sit on a shelf for eons.

It's richly flavored, its texture is delicate and tender, and best of all, it's organic.

Here's the trick to softening - and then keeping soft - brown sugar. Get a container that you can seal well. Then purchase a terra cotta brown sugar disk: Brown Sugar Disc - Various, Eagle, Cat

First, soak the terra cotta disk as directed. If the brown sugar is so hard you can't get it in the container, then put the soaked disk into the packagine. Otherwise, put sugar into the container, add the soaked disk and seal. The next day your sugar will be soft.

I have one of these disks. One time I forgot to seal my container and the brown sugar dried out. I re-soaked my terra cotta disk, added it back to the container and the next day it was all softened.

I love wholesome sweeteners sugars and buying it off Amazon (especially if you have Amazon Prime) is a good deal.

I've never had a problem with this sugar. Unlike other reviewers, mine doesn't dry out at all, let alone from the get-go. It's richly flavored, its texture is delicate and tender, and best of all, it's organic. No nasty chemicals! That alone would make it worth it. It's great for baking or eating straight (strawberries dipped in sour cream and then brown sugar... I'm drooling just thinking about it). It's the only brown sugar I've used in the last two years and I'll continue doing so.

FYI "brown sugar" is nothing more than plain sugar + molasses, organic and fair trade if you wish. Mix with a fork 1 cup white sugar with 1 tablespoon molasses for light brown, or with 2 tablespoons molasses for dark brown. If this is inconvenient, go ahead and buy brown sugar. I bought it in the fall for all the baking I do around holiday time. Organic and fair trade is important to me, so Wholesome Sweeteners is the one I chose.

This isnt as cheap as the regular brown sugar you purchase in the super market, but its much healthier. To me healthier, organic food is worth it. The consistency of the sugar is same as regular brown sugar. I liked buying the 6 at a time so I can stock up the pantry. I'll buy again when these run low.

I am glad I found this product on Amazon. The box of six packages of brown sugar were very fresh, not hard as some store brands that sit on a shelf for eons. The sugar itself is of great quality and tastes fantastic. My wife loves it in bowls of cream of wheat (wheat farina). The whole family uses it for baking. My primary reason for liking this brand is I know the company helps the farmers who produce it, and it is produced in a manner that is less harmful to the environment. Part of any products value is not just the product itself but also in knowing how it is made and being sure of the products claims, in this case the sugar is certified as USDA Organic, and it is Fair Trade certified.

I have been using this light brown sugar for a couple years. I just started selling my organic baked goods at the local farmers market and I use this along with the dark brown sugar (also from Wholesome Sweeteners) in my cinnamon rolls. They are fantastic! They are both so soft and they aren't clumpy at all. I don't have to worry about the hard as a rock pieces in it at all. Makes mixing it much easier. I won't use any brand but Wholesome sweeteners for my brown sugar needs. I have not gotten any hard bags yet!

Great taste. I like that it is packaged in several pouches even when buying bulk. You can choose to open all into a larger container, or, if you aren't baking that much, open one at a time to save space and keep the sugar fresh. Have ordered the bulk order twice now and will continue to do so.

I love love love the smell of brown sugar, so when I ordered this and opened it up, that's kind of what I was expecting. It doesn't smell bad - but it doesn't smell like the brown sugar I've been used to all these years - as my kids put it, it smells like raisins :-) While it isn't a bad smell, I was just surprised at first because it was different than what I was expecting. I was curious if it would change the taste of any of the recipes I use it in, but so far it hasn't at all. The big test will be when I use it to make Pioneer Woman's caramel sauce recipe - if the taste of that recipe (which is, in large part, brown sugar) stays the same, then I am sold! Either way, this is the brand I will use for the majority of my cooking from now because it is organic. Also, I am happy to report that all 6 bags arrived very fresh and soft, with no hard lumps at all!

UPDATE 4/18/14: Just tried this brown sugar in the caramel sauce recipe I mentioned above and it turned out PERFECT! No different taste at all, this is the brand I will continue to use!
