4.0 out of 5 stars An organic, natural sugar substitute that actually tastes like sugar, January 15, 2008
Organic Zero is a sugar substitute made from organic cane sugar. By fermenting the sugar, the manufacturer, Wholesome Sweeteners, creates erythritol, a naturally-occurring sugar alcohol product. Sugar alcohols taste exactly like sugar, but without the calories and blood sugar spike. And they are alcohols in chemistry terms only, not to be confused with the kind of alcohol one finds in adult beverages.

PROS:

* Tastes just like sugar and has no unpleasant aftertastes.

* Has a glycemic index of zero. Great for diabetics or those simply wishing to eliminate excess sugar from their diets.

* Contains no calories.

* Made from organically-grown cane sugar, unlike some other erythritol products on the market. The Organic Zero product itself tastes sweeter than some other brands, also.

* Made by a manufacturer committed to a wide range of sweeteners, so the company is experienced and trusted in its field.

* Occurs naturally in many foods. The FDA recognizes erythritol as a viable and safe sugar substitute. Erythritol-based sweeteners have been on the market in other countries for years.

* Unlike some other sugar alcohols such as xylitol, mannitol, and sorbitol, will not cause gas if consumed in large amounts.

* Not only does not promote tooth decay, but the properties of erythritol actually prevent it, inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria.

* Can be used in baking.

CONS:

* Not quite as sweet as sugar. You need about a quarter to a third more of erythritol by volume for an equivalent.

* Though it tastes exactly like sugar, erythritol has a slight, mint-like, cooling effect on the tongue. In foods where that effect would be undesirable, erythritol would need to be combined with another sweetener to diminish the effect. (This effect seems to vary from person to person, too.)

* In some clear liquids such as tea, adding erythritol will initially cloud the liquid, though the cloudiness fades quickly. (That issue probably comes from the release of oxygen bubbles as the product dissolves.)

* Though it dissolves, erythritol does not do so as rapidly as sugar. It will retain its granularity in some foods. (Some people recommended powdering it to compensate.)

* Because it involves extra steps to make from its sugar source, this is not a cheap product. Its organic source also adds to the cost. Perhaps in the future, economies of scale will drive the price down.

Many companies are discovering the benefits of erythritol as a natural sugar substitute that lacks the nagging questions that dog artificial sweeteners like sucralose and aspartame. Wholesome Sweeteners' Organic Zero remains one of the better erythritol products on the market. Though not cheap, it's worth it for its organic cane source and healthy properties.

Definitely recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than Splenda??, March 28, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
After seeing this product reviewed on TV, we ordered some as it fit our desire to eat better. We have tried all the sugar alternatives and were using Splenda. Two primary comments: 1) it is expensive costing about 20 cents per package and 2) it has about half the sweetness of Splenda. It takes close to two packs (and the packs are very much larger than Splenda) to achieve a similar sweetness. We use 1 1/2 pack each or three packs per day with white tea. Accordingly, the three pack lasts about one month and costs $21.95 (22 cents per package.)

Without some kind of blood tests before and after, I do not notice any physical differences in my body. However, we are getting used to tea tasting less sweet going on the pretext that Zero is better for us.

We have also tried the Blue Agave liquid sweetner with similar results except it does not last as long as it takes much more Agave than honey to achieve expected sweetness. On a per cup of tea basis, it is more expensive than Zero and has an after taste I haven't gotten used to yet.

The three rating is for expense and lack of sweetness. However, all things good for you cost more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous substitute for sugar without chemicals!, January 8, 2008
By
A. Varela (United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After finding out that my Splenda wasn't so "splendid" for me, I had to find an alternative to sugar for my coffee. This was FABULOUS! My husband doesn't like it because it isn't as sweet as Splenda, but since it isn't toxic, doesn't change your blood glucose levels, isn't toxic, doesn't promote cavaties, isn't toxic, and has no "off" aftertaste, it seems like a great substitute to me. Did I mention this stuff isn't toxic like so many other sugar substitutes???

A bit pricey compared to the more common, chemical options, but isn't your overall health worth it? After all, you can pay for it in your food, or you can pay for it in your healthcare costs over the course of your lifetime. Your choice.
