Biography

The smoky, smooth pop vocals of Nat "King" Cole make us tend to forget that, at heart, he was essentially a jazz performer. His piano proficiency, vocal phrasings, and utter coolness all hark back to his jazz roots, even in his decidedly pop repertoire or arrangements. Whether singing "Nature Boy", jamming with guitarist Oscar Moore, or performing posthumous duets with his daughter Natalie Cole,… Read more in Amazon's Nat King Cole Store

To Whom It May Concern is yet another terrific CD by Nat King Cole. We get all the tracks from the LP release of this album; and we also get four extra bonus tracks as well! The sound quality is superb; and I like the artwork, too.

The CD begins with the title track, a torch song named "To Whom It May Concern." Nat sings this beautiful torch song with panache and he makes it sound as smooth as silk! I am very impressed with Nat's fine interpretation of this ballad. The percussion adds to the beauty of the melody, too. "Love-Wise" continues with another lush arrangement; and Nat sings this with all his heart and soul. Nat focuses on how much he loves romantic time with his one true love. "In The Heart Of Jane Doe" shines like pure gold when Nat King Cole delivers this flawlessly; and the strings together with the brass are beautiful for this love ballad. He sings sweetly of a woman who was rather important to him on this somewhat melancholy number.

"You're Bringing Out the Dreamer In Me" is yet another tender love song that Nat King Cole infuses with all the emotions of love as he sings this; the piano arrangement in the background is subtle yet very elegant. Great! Nat's excellent timing and diction bolster his performance even more. "If You Said No" places Nat's vocals squarely front and center; and again the lush arrangement enhances the natural beauty of this melody.

"Lovesville" has a great chorus to backup Nat's singing; and this all works very well. The big band style arrangement helps this number hold its own without any difficulties. There is also the last number from the LP release of this album entitled "This Morning It Was Summer;" Nat's voice is like a fine, tuned instrument just perfect for this gorgeous love song. "This Morning It Was Summer" has Nat singing his heart out about his love for a woman that may not stay the same.

We then are treated to four bonus tracks not found on the record album release. "Non Dimenticar" sounds fresh and new when Nat sings it. There are some backup vocal effects but this is one time I wish they hadn't done this; Nat's performance alone would have made this more than perfect.

Overall, this is an excellent CD for fans of Nat King Cole. Of course, people who like classic pop vocals will love this CD; and people who enjoy the "oldies" will be charmed as well.

Nat King Cole's pairing with Nelson Riddle has created some beautiful albums, and this is no exception. To Whom It May Concern is one of the best albums, I've had the pleasure of listening to. With it's lush strings, brass and Nat's smooth vocals, who could ask for anything more?

Recorded in 1958 at Capitol Studios, in Hollywood. Using Capitol's wonderful stereo sound. The guys at Collector's Choice Music, have really done a wonderful job with the remastering. If you buy this, you won't be disappointed.
