A wonderful blast from the past for British Motown group,
By Michael Erisman (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: To Whom It May Concern (Audio CD)
The Pasadena's are a band which never really hit it here in the States, which is too bad. Unlike many American pop bands who were inspired by the numerous bands from the UK, this group took its inspiration from the other direction.Blending the sound of Motown, and house dance music, this CD is a collection of fun songs reminiscent of the Temptations, or the Four Tops. This was the debut CD for them and one stand out track, "Tribute", is a fitting song about the legends in soul music which played ever so briefly in the USA charts and was the song that inspired me to purchase this CD nearly 14 years ago. I have now officially worn it out from overuse, and recently purchased the re-release with bonus tracks. The bonus tracks are worth the effort as well. If you are unfamiliar with this band, but enjoy the uplifting toe tapping funky sound of Motown music; give this CD and this band a chance. You won't be disappointed.

I had been searching for this CD for a while. I had purchased it way back in the day on cassette, and lost it. I was happy to find it again, and it seems to me it has more songs on it than the original which was a nice surprise!

It was 1988, but it sounds like they're (happily) stuck in 1965,

Not the typical soul vocal group that might have popped up in 1988, The Pasadenas take many of the elements (including a retro-sounding name) of legendary Motown and Philly Soul vocal groups and creates a beautifully robust soul album full of strong, harmonious vocals and no samples. Nor are they afraid to blend their vocals with touches of modern, jazz-oriented production, making it able to sound unusually robust for its time without having to keep up any pretenses of being older than it actually is.

In 1989 the only songs I heard from the Pasadenas were "Right on" and "Riding on a Train" the group never actually got that much air play on the radio here in the US, save for the now defunct "Video Soul."
This CD is great and from a group who was stuck in a time warp they did very well and deserve alot of praise.

Although The Pasadenas were not known in the U.S., I was fortunate to discover this album (originally on cassette) around the time of its release. The lyrics, vocals and music are top notch. 20 years later (now on CD), they are still one of my favorite bands. I look forward to receiving the follow-up release, which I recently ordered.
