5.0 out of 5 stars Just gotta' read it!, August 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: For Whom the Stars Shine (Jewel of the Pacific, Book 1) (Paperback)
This is one of Linda Chaikin's best. It's set in tropical Hawaii as well as San Fransisco. In the book, Eden is stuck in the middle of Hawaiian politics, as well as the mystery surrounding her mother's death. How can she learn the truth? If that isn't enough, this novel also tells you about the first missionaries to come to Hawaii and their somewhat wayward descendants. It also has romance! A MUST read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Research on the Second book, January 10, 2007
This review is from: For Whom the Stars Shine (Jewel of the Pacific, Book 1) (Paperback)
I loved this book when it first came out, and have been waiting for book two, I went to Linda's website and here is her answer... Q: Is there is a book 2 that follows, "For Whom the Stars Shine?"
A: "For Whom the Stars Shine" is a stand alone novel for which the publisher decided not to continue it into a series. I think that was unfortunate since this book was later nominated for the Christy Award.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Linda Chaikin, May 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: For Whom the Stars Shine (Jewel of the Pacific, Book 1) (Paperback)
Once again, Linda has captured my attention while not bogging me down with too many historical details! She has the art of sharing history with her fiction that makes it all seem so true.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eden finds out about her mothers death after much opposition, March 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: For Whom the Stars Shine (Jewel of the Pacific, Book 1) (Paperback)
I thought this book is one of Linda Chaikin's best. I enjoy history and appereciated the history of how Americans first came to Hawaii and how some cared enough to start a leper colony. Eden chooses to become a nurse to help her father discover a cure for the lepers. I also enjoyed the mystery of how Eden tried to find out how her mother actually died since no one ever wanted to discuss it with her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable if you're interested in Hawaiian history, November 7, 2010

This review is from: For Whom the Stars Shine (Jewel of the Pacific, Book 1) (Paperback)
"For Whom the Stars Shine" is a historical set mainly in Hawaii from 1888 to 1891. It also has a fairly typical romance and a mystery about Eden's mother's death. However, it's primarily a historical novel, and anyone skilled in solving mystery novels will probably have this mystery figured out before the book is halfway done.

Daily and social historical details were woven into the story which created a vivid picture of what life was like then. There was also a lot of information on the (past) Hawaiian missionary movement and (current) political turmoil in Hawaii due to the plantation owners wanting to have Hawaii made an American territory. If you're not interested in this, then you'll probably find the level of detail a little heavy since more information was given than was strictly needed. However, if you are interested, this story is a very enjoyable way to learn about about this history.

The characters were engaging, though Eden was rather naive and the only other character we really got to know was Rafe. The suspense was created by the mystery surrounding Eden's mother's death and the family discord.

There was a high level of Christian content, from giving the history of the missionaries on Hawaii to a preacher character who liked to quote Scripture. But I didn't feel like any of it was preaching at the reader. There was no bad language or sex. Overall, I'd recommend this novel as an enjoyable way to learn more about this period in Hawaiian history.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book to read. Can't wait for the next one!!, July 9, 2000
This review is from: For Whom the Stars Shine (Jewel of the Pacific, Book 1) (Paperback)
Linda Chaikin has wowed me with another book. I've read her Lions of the Desert series, The Buccaneers series, A Day to Remember series, Trade Winds series, and Heart of India series. This book is as great as these. I recommend to anyone who likes to read about romance, political subjects and a woman's love for her God, and her country and her parents. This is a great book and I can't wait for the second one! Thanks Linda!
