Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Grade 7-9-An interesting and well-written biography. Goldberg's life is traced from her childhood in a housing project in the Chelsea section of New York to her early introduction to acting at a neighborhood youth theater, her battle with drugs, life as a single parent, and her successful career as an entertainer. Caper relates Goldberg's professional life from her start in Berkeley, CA, portraying Moms Mabley on stage, then moving back to New York to star in her own Broadway production, and, finally, her entry into film with The Color Purple. Her community involvement and fund-raising for the homeless, AIDS, cancer, and other serious illnesses are also noted. This is a more detailed and current biography than Sandor Katz's Whoopi Goldberg (Chelsea, 1996) or Mary Adams's Whoopi Goldberg (Silver Burdett, 1993). Black-and-white photos appear throughout.

From Booklist

Goldberg's impressive rise from welfare recipient to major movie star is well chronicled in this admiring biography. Born in a New York City housing project, Goldberg was a former drug addict, a single mother, and a movie star by the time she was 20. Sixteen years later she became the second African American woman to win an Academy Award. Since then, her career and personal life have undergone many publicized ups and downs. Caper does a nice job of explaining the performer's sometimes complicated thoughts on race, gender, and art but does not provide a lot of details about the struggles Goldberg had to overcome. The facts of Goldberg's life make for an inspirational story, but the biography will be more useful as a reference than as a motivational tool. A chronology, a filmography, suggested readings, notes, and an adequate number of black-and-white photos are provided. Marta Segal

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Whoopi Goldberg: Comedian and Movie Star (African-American Biographies (Enslow)) (Library Binding)
I read this book for a report for school last spring, and I really enjoyed it! This book gave me all the info I needed for the whole report! I was really inspired by this book beacuse of it's choice of words and how it helped me better understand Whoopi's life story. I did not find this book hard in any way, so it would be a good book for anyone from 9 years old up.
