Grade 5-8. Borrowing the cover illustration and direct quotes from Rose Blue's biography for older readers, Whoopi Goldberg (Chelsea, 1994), this biography provides a wide range of facts about and a few colorful insights into Goldberg's life. Katz opens with a description of the performer's first big Broadway success and then goes on to describe her early life in New York City. Following her career from repertory theater to the triumph of earning an Academy Award, the book never loses sight of Goldberg's thoughts and feelings about her profession and the causes that are important to her. Many black-and-white photos accompany the narrative, showing both candid shots and publicity photos from her stage and screen work. One annoyance, however, are italicized words within the text that later show up in the glossary. Besides not giving an explanation as to what the italics might mean, Katz uses a disparate list of terms, ranging from apartheid to dyslexia to medium, as in psychic medium. Still, this is a good choice for libraries seeking to enhance their collections of biographies of notable African Americans, women, and current celebrities.?Carol Fazioli, Cardinal Hayes Library, Manhattan College, NY
