Book Description

December 1997
Brothel owners are men reared in the underbelly of society. While that may be mostly true, Walter Plankinton was an exception: a Kansas farm boy/Great Depression baby, whose only association with the street was twice during his teens for about 15 minutes. Strong and fearless, Walter got rich in trucking by working like a smart, industrious mule, later dovetailing all of his business savvy into the design of The Chicken Ranch Brothel in Nevada.

But something happened along the way. Although to Walter prostitutes had always been the virgins and straight women the real whores, his girls soon became little more than crops to market. Whoremaster, a biography, reveals aspects of both his subtle and blatant metamorphosis: from country bumpkin to successful, self-made captain of industry, to entrepreneurial pimp.

Walter takes us through doors never before breached, partly for revenge, more from vanity: mostly to strut like a peacock before men he would never meet, but who were all wildly envious of him or so he passionately believed.

Whoremaster reveals characteristics of prostitutes rarely seen; certainly more is unveiled about the status and character of brothel customers ( johns ) than anywhere before.

Quite by accident, Walter and his girls put The Chicken Ranch on the world map. Then a fire, meant to roast him and his girls alive, was lit. Even as media exposed it around the world, local law enforcement virtually ignored it, and a usually hidden side of Nevada was unmasked.

Whoremaster contains drama, comedy, and occasionally titillation, while not pornographic. Never boring, it comes across more like fiction than the fact it is.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

When the opportunity to write about a man who avoided good-old-boy, not to mention mob, affiliation while operating within one of their known controlled industries arose, I couldn't ignore it. An independent woman who believes that everyone has the right to choose his/her own way of life, and certain I knew quite a bit about the prostitution industry admittedly gleaned almost exclusively through movies and the news media I was astonished by a whole new insight into both the physical and psychological drama, comedy, tragedy and raw reality in this setting most consider part of the very real underworld. I make a point of sharing some unusual, and unquestionably little-known, facts with the reader that someone termed stomach-turning. I knew if they made my eyes pop wide open, others would be fascinated, too. Each time I shared new information with friends and watched their mirror reactions, I knew it all had to be in there, even the yucky stuff.

I must admit that my passion is probably equally divided among business, professional, and creative writing. Most consider business and professional writing parchment dry. I find it challenging to display their occasional naturally contained drama, fearlessly, and with panache.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprise! Who is the REAL Whoremaster?, August 12, 2001
This review is from: Whoremaster: A biography (Paperback)
Wendy Cole does a wonderful job telling the sad and sordid story of Walter Plankinton, who opened one of the most recognized brothels in America, "The Chicken Ranch" in Nye County, Nevada. Many people will read the very detailed account of his life and feel sorry for how the prostitutes that he fell in love with and married used and abused him breaking his heart each time. Others will learn of the deep corruption in Nye county where government officials live off illegal payoffs and wage war with the brothel owner who refuses to pay them off.

So who IS the real Whoremaster? Was it Walter who loved the fallen ladies that sold their bodies? The hookers who controlled Walter with their false pledge of love and marrage only to run off with his money? Or the corrupt Nye county government officials who sold their souls and the people trust with corruption?

What you may realize after reading this well written book is that the real whoremaster is not the honest owner of a legal brothel, but those who abuse the a trust, public or private, to become drunk on power and greed. No one in this book comes away with clean hands. Real life is so much more complex then any ficton story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! Everything you were ever curious about a brothel, September 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Whoremaster: A biography (Paperback)
Wendy captured the essence of the man and the business he ran. You understand the innermost workings of both the brothel and the man who started one of the most famous or should I say infamous "whorehouses" in the world. Could not put it down.
