Book Description

August 5, 1991 0435909770 978-0435909772

Adewale Maja-Pearce analyzes contemporary African politics and society with absolute candor in these essays. Drawing on first-hand observations, and on conversations with journalists, intellectuals, students, artists, taxi drivers, and businessmen, he exposes the abuse of human rights by African governments, and celebrates the courage of those individuals who stand up to tyranny.

Editorial Reviews

Review

?His insider tone rings with a resonant familiarity as he describes the streets of Lagos; simultaneously, as an outsider, he maintains a distance that enables an honest analysis.?-International Journal of African Historical Studies

More About the Author

I am an Anglo-Nigerian writer currently living in Lagos, Nigeria. I am the author of a number of books, including Loyalties and Other Stories, How many miles to Babylon?, A Mask Dancing, Who's Afraid of Wole Soyinka?, From Khaki to Agbada, and Remembering Ken Saro-Wiwa and Other Essays. I have also edited The Heinemann Book of African Poetry in English, Wole Soyinka: An Appraisal, and Christopher Okigbo: Collected Poems. I run YEMAJA, an editorial services agency. I also have a small publishing company, The New Gong: www.thenewgong.com. I am currently working on a critical biography of J. P. Clark-Bekederemo, the Nigerian poet and playwright. I am married to Juliet Ezenwa, the artist: www.julietezenwa.com. I enjoy reading (naturally), watching movies and travelling, having travelled extensively throughout Africa, especially when I worked as Africa editor of the London-based INDEX ON CENSORSHIP, the magazine of free expression. I was also former editor of the now defunct African Writers Series. I have an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Interesting details? I doubt there are any apart from the above.
