This review is from: Who's Who in Animated Cartoons: An International Guide to Film and Television's Award-Winning and Legendary Animators (Paperback)
This book contains a lot of information about various animation pioneers throughout the history of the industry. I have it as a required book for a history of animation class I teach. The only complaint my students make is it needs pictures to go along with the animators and their most acclaimed work.

This book was a gift and it is a lot of fun, but I have never seen so many editing errors and factual mistakes in my life!! Repeated phrases in the same sentence, and sentences that run on for eight to ten lines in the book with so many commas used that I lose the idea of what the sentence was about in the first place! Then there's the factual errors such as saying that Tex Avery died in the Hanna-Barbera parking lot when he actually was found there by Hanna and taken to the hospital and died weeks later from cancer, or that Maurice Noble returned to Warners' Chuck Jones unit in 1951 and helped to create the layouts for a cartoon that was released in 1948! Then there's the comment that the Francis the Talking Mule films were made by United International Pictures when it was UNIVERSAL International Pictures! I like the book, but I think I'm having more fun reading to find mistakes than anything else.

Here's the first biographical reference to detail the careers of nearly three hundred animation greats around the world, from producers and directors to animator artists. It's written in cooperation with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and scientists and other major film and award groups, and provides an A-Z reference of biographical information, discussions of early film works and styles, key films, and character evolution. While this could've been featured in our arts or cartooning sections, it's reviewed here so nobody will miss its biographical strengths.

This book has Smurfs! YES! (as a child of the 80s, I have many a fond memory of watching Smurfs :)
But really, this book is both a comprehensive reference and also just fun to look through. The bulk of it is biographies on the most influential animators of film and television. Don't know much about animators? No problem. Just look up your favorite character in the index and find out who brought him (or her) (or it!) to life. Black and white photos of the animators are scattered throughout, and the center section has a nice collection of color prints.

The information in this book regarding the death of Freddie Moore is incorrect, unless the author has new information which he has neglected to cite.

Highly Recommend It,
This review is from: Who's Who in Animated Cartoons: An International Guide to Film and Television's Award-Winning and Legendary Animators (Paperback)
I couldn't put down my copy of this book after buying it. It is an amazing chronicle of animation legends and pioneers, including James Stuart Blackton, Walt Disney, Max Fleischer, Walter Lantz, Chuck Jones and others, but also many important animators and their accomplishments from nearly every country in movies as well as television. I heartily recommend it.
