A life saver!!,
This review is from: Hey! Who's Having This Baby Anyway? : How to take charge and create a safe environment for your baby's birth, including essential information about ... and interventions -- a guide and workbook. (Paperback)
I started reading this book when I was 4 months pregnant (I'm 7 months now). I have never felt so informed, so educated and in control of my pregnancy and upcoming birth. Breck Hawk's book has not only opened my eyes to the risks of the belt-fed, expected epidurals and the quick-to-perform c-sections, but it has given me other options and information in regards to alternatives. We rely so much on what Doctor's tell us that we don't take it upon ourselves to look outside the box. Breck does just that!! This book covers the risks of epidurals, birth plans, your RIGHT to tell a Doctor/hospital staff that this is YOUR birth and you're the boss, etc. Her book is subjective, informative, educational, empowering and a WORTH IT buy!!
This book hands you the power of choice. You set the rules of your baby's birth and you are in the driver's seat. I would recommend this book to any pregnant woman. Throw out "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and embrace the power of education and choice!! If you want a REAL book, read this one!! This book, is a woman's right to freedom and education over her birth, an INFORMED, subjective educational tool.

This book really allows us to 'see behind the curtain' of what is going on in a 'typical' birth! Every pregnant woman owes it to herself and her baby to read this book. Every Doula, husband, friend, sister or anyone that will be in the birth room needs to read this book and believe it. Being prepared is being calm and sure of yourself. I have been a midwife for 16 years and have wanted and waited for this very book-since 99% of the birthing public births in a hospital, 99% of you NEED THIS BOOK! Ms. Hawk has dared to tell us the accurate details of what happens from the moment you find out you are pregnant to the first excited call to the hosptial when you think you are in labor to all that can and will happen; once you arrive at the hospital in labor if you are unaware of the 'routine' that awaits you. She also lets us in on, "I don't know how it happened that I ended up with...."; she points out how other agendas affect your decisions and birthing outcomes, often every step of the way.
I have been GIVING this book out to all of my clients and all of my students. When everyone understands what is really going on, we all win!

As a birth doula and childbirth educator, I've an extensive library of birth-related books and am happy to add this to my collection. This book provides the information necessary for women to make sound decisions regarding their care. It also works as a guide in helping them to discover exactly WHAT their birth options are and the best way to go about getting the birth experience they desire through well researched material and helpful worksheets. Birth is a major life event, worthy of AT LEAST the consideration that goes into planning a wedding or buying a home-please don't go into in blind. Buy this book, you won't regret it.

As both a childbirth educator and a labor doula, I find this book has great (and accurate) information, with worksheets that are perfect for discovering what you want as a pregnant woman, good research to help backup all the claims, PLUS it's written by a midwife! I could go on and on, so just put away that copy of "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and get this one instead! Inform yourself and respect your baby!

I had the pleasure of attending one of Ms. Hawk's workshops recently and found it so informative. The information in this book is not new - it's just written in a way that the layperson can understand. Ina May Gaskin and Henci Goer have lots of great information about the unfortunate state of childbirth in the US, but Breck Hawk has "broken it down" for the average expectant mom without condescending. I highly recommend it!

This was the first book I bought on intervention-free childbirth and remains the best out of the bunch... I find myself continually returning to it. (It's also the only one my husband read all the way through, which believe me, is quite an edorsement). With this book -- as well as Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, also fantastic -- I feel not only empowered to demand the birthing experience I want, but equipped to negotiate the slings and arrows of doctors/parents/friends/strangers who challenge my decisions. Thanks, Breck... ;)

I wasn't thrilled with this book. I found it a little didactic (albeit in an overly breezy style)--not the book for people who aren't sure about natural birth; it'll make middle-of-the-road moms feel inadequate.
The style is blog-like and too personal to the author at times for an instructive book, in my opinion. The section that's nothing more than quoted emails is interesting for a couple of pages, then becomes overkill; I felt like I was reading a message board. I noted numerous typographical errors (including a major one in statistics that was corrected with an errata sticker), which detracted from the professionalism of the book. The section on Cytotec is excellent, with an appropriately firm stance, and the facts and documents to back that up.

An EXCELLENT resource for expecting parents!,
This review is from: Hey! Who's Having This Baby Anyway? : How to take charge and create a safe environment for your baby's birth, including essential information about ... and interventions -- a guide and workbook. (Paperback)
This is definately a GREAT book. There are even childbirth classes geared around this book. The information provided is up-to-date and is extremely thorough. Explanation of the risks and benefits for interventions, options for natural childbirth, and resources (includes doulas), are invaluable. A great buy for every expecting mom! I recommend to all my clients!

If only this book had been available ten and half years ago, I might not now have the scar on my belly that I do.
This book is indispensable. No, birth cannot be controlled or totally planned, but, ultimately, only mothers can ensure their own safety, as well as their babies', at birth and beyond. Do yourself a favor, read this book. |
