I'm just not sure that it gets any better than this. No silly riffing, no vocal gymnastics just to prove that she can do it, no insincere or forced emotion. Just simple, honest purity from an amazing lady. Highly recommended.

Candi Staton is a legendary singer who with each new release is something to look forward to and this Memphis Classic features Ms. Staton in peak form and hopefully this tremendous collection will get the attention deserved of such a perfect set of superb and real performances that stay with the listener long after they are over. Magnificent collection could be called "Candi In Memphis" as everything from songs to arrangements is complete perfection...then there is that soulful glorious voice and please pay note Grammy Foundation! Anyone with a love and appreciation of great singers of Jazz, Blues & Soul don't miss this one...Candi really took it home this time out and already looking forward to what is next from this incredibly gifted lady...Bravo Candi!

I discovered her in the 70's with her dance tunes, then found her original southern soul LPs from Memphis. I have always felt her voice and the hurt and hope in it. She spent most of the 80s and 90s recording gospel. Now she is back with another soul CD after "His Hands". Amazing. I dare you to listen to "Mercy Now" or "Get Your Hands Dirty" and not feel the power of music in all its tender glory. She has always been one of my favorites and this CD reminds me why. It will be under a few friends' cChristmas trees this year!

I find it hard to believe that this was the first time I heard her. Her voice is beautiful and the songs are bluesy top notch. When I purchased this CD it was purportedly the last copy in stock. I hope it's been restocked.

Former WEA Rep for NYC! Always felt that she was under rated and "Run to Me" should have been a Disco smasher as well as R&B/pop hit. I am now retired and living in NC. I still have my extensive LP original collection with duplicate CDs. Candi's music is good time as Gloria Lynne's is for laid back. I will always love Candi's presentations of any song in any style. The Candi Staton renaissance with the UK's Honest Jons label took place in 2006 with the awesome album - "His Hands" - a tour de force by anyone's standards. This 2009 follow is good - very good -but not in the same class as its predecessor. Maybe the expectations were too much.
Part of this is the absolutely suicidal attempt to cover Mary Gauthier's "Mercy Now" an incredible song that Ms Staton manages to strip of most of the power and emotion of the original. The other songs are okay - but the commitment and freshness on "His Hands" is just not present here.
